Restaurant Atmosphere/ Decor

Owner Pat Atkins said “We are thrilled to have been chosen, we really appreciate it.” She said what inspires her in the business is good food and wanting to serve other people. Ice Cream

Winner: Manning Farm Dairy, 420 State St., Clarks Summit, 586-1288. Jean Manning said, “We are so grateful for the loyalty.” Jean credits her husband Paul and their children for the hard work they put into the farm, adding “We love doing this.” The Mannings will open their newest ice cream store on the corner of Lackawanna Ave. and Main Street, on the West Side of Scranton by summer. The store an addition to the farm in Dalton and stores in Clarks Summit, on Meadow Avenue, Scranton and Blakely Street, Dunmore.

Donuts

Winner: Krispy Kreme, 831 Northern Blvd. South Abington Twp., 585-4120. Owners are Joseph, Margery and Noel Adcroft.

Cup of coffee

Winner: Starbucks, 1131 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 587-5750. Kevin Snow, general manager said, “Everyone (in the Abingtons) is really friendly, we have a loyal customer base.” He added that they are very active in the community and, “We are here to stay.” Runner Up: Dunkin Donuts

Bakery

Winner: Euro Caf�, 1121 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 587-2233. Sisters and owners of Euro Cafe are Stephanie Decker, Sara Grande, Andrea Bittenbender and Joanna Connor. Decker said of the award, “It is definitely an honor. The people of greater Clarks Summit embrace small businesses. Being in Clarks Summit is the best place for us to be.”

Runner Up: Creative Cakes, 323 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 585-0223.

Sandwiches

Winner: Waverly Deli, 705 Clinton St., Waverly, 586-6755. Mari Byron, owner of the deli for the past nine years said, “A special thank you to all our customers.” The deli has a steady flow of customers, Byron said, “We have our loyal customers, they come in for coffee in the a.m., the construction workers come in for lunch and the after school crowd, then the locals for dinner. It is great to be right there.” Runner Up: Caravia Fresh Foods, 1151 Northern Blvd., Clarks Summit, 586-6113.

Sub Shop

Winner: Subway, 860 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 585-7827. “I’ve worked at several Subways, and this one has the nicest customers,” said Alex Crestfield, manager. He added, “We offer a fresh product, good customer service and a nice atmosphere.” He also said that the restaurant is family oriented.

Runner up: Cangiano’s, 715 N. State St., Clarks Summit, 586-4896. Leslie Reynolds, employee, said of the restaurant, “It is family run, and all of us are friends.” She added that the food is authentic Italian and they always have the freshest products.

Hamburger

Winner: Wellington’s, Routes 6 and 11, Clarks Summit, 586-1313.

Other awards: Winner, Billiards, Hamburger; Runner Up, Steak.

Runner Up: Jim Dandy’s, 318 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 586-6000.Other awards: Runner up, Martini bar.

Diner

Winner: The Summit Diner, 108 S. State St., Clarks Summit, 587-4677. Owner Steve Seamon said, “It is a privilege to serve the customers of the Abingtons. I love what I do.”

Runner Up: The Gourmet, 645 Northern Blvd., Chinchilla, 586-9993.

Pizza

Winner: Armetta’s, 329 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 586-5492. Owner Lisa Armetta said of the award, “It means the most because it came from the readers.” Going on its twentieth year, the restaurant has a family atmosphere, Armetta added, and she wants her customers to be comfortable.

Catering/ Food to go

Winner: Caravia Fresh Foods, 1151 Northern Blvd., Clarks Summit, 586-6113. General Manager Ryan Cognetti said, “We have a lot of people who come in here who like to support local business.” Cognetti added that he enjoys the customers, and the opportunity to have funny exchanges with them.

Other awards: Runner up, Sandwiches.

Formal Dining

Winner: Amici, 1300 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit, 586-3000. Owners are Sean Scanlon, Mark Massetti and Woody Wilson, and silent partners, John and Alice Vanston. Scanlon said, “We would like to thank all our faithful customers.” Wilson said, “We like to think of it as a good working environment, the same people have been here for a long time,” Wilson said. “Quality is our big thing here,” Massetti added. The trio also added that during the summer months, the deck will be open.

Asian Restaurant

Winner: Kyoto, 1000 State Street, 587-3236.

Runner Up: Formosa, 727 S. State St., Clarks Summit, 585-1902. Owners Michael Lam and Sherrie Lee said they love the community, “Because the people are really nice and they are hungry for Asian fusion.” Other awards: Runner Up, Restaurant for vegetarians and Place for a first date.

Italian Restaurant

Winner: Amore, 223 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 587-4333. Ben Duckworth said, “Clarks Summit is a great community, great people, loyal customers and we couldn’t do it without our great staff.” He added on the restaurant’s entertainment, “We bring in acts, some from in and out of town, but we are lucky to have a great pool of musicians to pick from.” Other awards: Runner Up, Place for jazz and Place to see a band.

Runner Up: Colarusso’s Cafe

Mexican Restaurant

Winner: Taco Bell, Route 6 and 11 and Sumner Ave., Clarks Summit, 586-5788. General Manager Lori Houser said, “We want to have an environment where people are comfortable. We want you to have a good experience. We like to interact with the customers and we know our regular customers by first name.” Other awards: Runner up, Chain Restaurant.

Runner Up: Don Pablo’s, 821 Commerce Blvd., Dickson City, 961-3484. Frank Palermo, assistant general manager, said “Our goal is to make every guest happy, every time.”

Restaurant for Vegetarians

Winner: Michaelangelo’s, 894 Old State Road, Clarks Summit, 586-0755, www.michaelangelosrestaurant.com. Owner is Michael Suchy. According to an interview in 2006 with the Abington Journal, the restaurant is considered a contemporary American restaurant, using basic technique with classic French and organic styles of cooking. The restaurant has gone as far as making sure all the fish it serves are wild and not raised on farms.

Seafood

Winner: Cooper’s Seafood, 701 North Washington Ave., Scranton, 346-6883. Mark Cooper, Executive Chef, said the award is awesome. He added that at Cooper’s, “We are environmentalist and all the food is American cut. We make sure it comes from American boats.”

Runner Up: Atlantic Fish and Fabulous Foods, 507 S. State St., Clarks Summit, 586-0999. Jessica Liples, new co-owner of Atlantic Fish said, “It is great to know that people consider us to be the best. We are happy and are keeping it going and are looking for new products.” Liples’ sister, Amanda is the other co-owner.

Steak

Winner: Great Uncle Peter’s, 1582 Newton Ransom Blvd., Clarks Summit, 586-6858. Robert Dickert, owner, said, “The people appreciate what we do here. It pays that if I can help them (the customer, with the cost of menu items), they can help me.”

Runner Up: Wellington’s

Wings

Winner: Armetta’s

Runner Up: McGrath’s Pub and Eatery

Ribs

Winner: Damon’s Grill, 820 Northern Blvd., Clarks Summit, 586-3737. Ed Bush Jr. said, “Our number one priority is the guest.” He added, “Being born and raised in this community, it gives us a sense of pride, and we are lucky enough to build a business that has been well -received by the locals, peers and friends over the past 48 years.”

Runner Up: Junior’s Chicken and Ribs, 639 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 585-7427. George Cottell, owner, said his family has been running businesses in the Abington since 1972. “We try to make the best food for our customers.”

Chain Restaurant

New Restaurant

Winner: Bazil, 1101 Northern Blvd., South Abington Twp., 586-5517. Owner Peter Montana said of the award, “First, thank you, and we appreciate it. It is not easy starting a business.” He added that at the newly opened New York style Italian restaurant, they are detail- oriented, and all the food is fresh and made to order.
