Friends, AseraCare assist library budget

In anticipation of a tough forthcoming economic year for the Lackawanna County Library System, member libraries were advised to cease ordering materials for the duration of 2009 unless they had alternative funding sources. The Abington Community Library (ACL) was fortunate to have found financial support from the Friends of the ACL and AseraCare Hospice, located in Clarks Summit. According to the library, the generosity will enable the library to continue to make modest purchases of materials through November 2009. Staff will continue to do their best to provide the community with the latest bestsellers and notable materials in print, DVD and talking book format. AseraCare Hospice and Abington Community Library are also collaborating with First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit to sponsor a grief workshop to help those needing help face the Holidays on Sunday, November 1. The event will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Ryon Room of the Library, located at 1200 W. Grove Street. Registration is suggested but not required for this presentation. Register by calling the Library at 570.587.3440.

To help overcome a budget deficit due to cuts in State funding, the Library will be holding its Annual Fund Drive beginning in November and a Holiday Marketplace on Friday, Nov. 13, 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 14 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of vendors will be on hand with great gift items for sale, many hand-crafted and unique. Teens will be offering a bake sale and a gift wrapping table. On Friday evening, cellist Joan Daniels and her strings group, Trio Barocco, will be performing from 7 to 8 pm. Also available now through Nov. 14 is a gift basket raffle. All proceeds benefit the Abington Community Library.
