Keystone hosts ‘Jazz and Java’

The best things in life are free, and Keystone College is proving the old saying correct this Sunday, Nov. 22, when it hosts the Dave Liebman Group during “Jazz and Java” in Evans Hall at 7 p.m.

Liebman has been a fixture on the jazz music scene since the early 1970s, playing with a number of legendary performers, including Miles Davis and Elvin Jones.

With those kinds of references, Liebman could be working with a number of different musicians, but instead he decided to form the Dave Liebman Group in 1991, preferring to work with a steady group of musicians instead of constantly working with different ones.

“The communication is of a higher level—you get to know somebody’s strengths and weaknesses,” Liebman said.

“The rewards are greater. When you start playing with a new band, you have to start all over again. With these guys, we have a great understanding on and off the stage.”

Since the group’s inception, the four-piece band has toured internationally and recorded 15 albums, including “Turn Around,” a collection of Ornette Coleman songs, due out later this year.

Liebman said the group is planning to play a number of Coleman songs when it takes the stage at Keystone College this Sunday. The group performed at Keystone College a few years ago, and was received so well the group has been asked back.

“It seemed like a nice time to bring the group back while we’re sounding so great,” said the band’s drummer Marko Marcinko.

The current lineup made up of Marcinko, along with guitarist Vic Juris and bassist Tony Marino, has been the band’s steady lineup since 2002.

“All of these guys are great musicians,” said Liebman.
