“A New Nation: The United States 1783 – 1815,” by Betsy and Giulio Maestro. With the Treaty of Paris, the American colonists had finally earned their freedom. It was time to establish unity among the 13 states and forge a new nation. During this time, the country grew and flourished but rising tensions with the British created more challenges to overcome. The Maestros tell the true story of the first 32 years of the United States, part of the American Story series for children.
“Albert Einstein,” by Kathleen Krull. The fifth book in the “Giants of Science” series, this biography focuses on a man who was not a scientist in the ordinary sense of the word. What he excelled at was thinking, and by endlessly pondering what he called “thought experiments,” brought about a new understanding of “givens,” such as time and space.
“The Games Book: How to Play the Games of Yesterday,” by Huw Davies. The games described in this book were played in eras when TV was not available, there was no such thing as a computer game, and the Internet was something far in the future. It’s intended to kindle enthusiasm for singing and circle games; string, card, and paper games; playground games; word and memory games; and chasing and hiding games.
“Nasreen’s Secret School,” by Jeanette Winter. Nasreen has not spoken a word to anyone since her parents disappeared. Her grandmother risks everything to enroll Nasreen in a secret school for girls, hoping that a devoted teacher, a new friend and the world of books will draw her out of her shell of sadness. Based on a true story from Afghanistan. For ages 6 to 9.
