The Abington Community Library will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12, while interior painting and renovations are underway. It will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, in observance of Columbus Day.
Although the library building will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 11, the Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale will be held as planned. It will take place at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, across from the library on the Morgan Highway, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Used books will be sold at bargain prices, and all proceeds benefit the library. An additional attraction will be a caf hosted by members of the Teen Leadership Committee of the library. They will be selling coffee and baked goods during the book sale to benefit teen programs and activities at the library.
Beginning on Oct. 13, registration for the second series of Fall Story Hours will begin. There will be various age appropriate programs scheduled, for toddlers through kindergarteners. Calendars with dates and times are available at the Children’s Desk. Registration needs to be made prior to the first session but does not need to be repeated for each subsequent week of the five-week program. Registration can be made in person at the library or by calling 587-3440.
“The War Within: A Secret White House History 2006-2008,” by Bob Woodward. In his fourth book on President George W. Bush, Woodward takes readers deep inside the tensions, secret debates, unofficial backchannels, distrust and determination within the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the intelligence agencies and the U.S. military headquarters in Iraq. He interviewed key players, obtained dozens of classified documents and had nearly three hours of interviews with the president.
“The Irregulars: Roald Dahl and the British Spy Ring in Wartime Washington,” by Jennet Conant. In telling the story of Dahl, then a dashing wounded RAF pilot, and his co-conspirators, the author provides a rare insider’s view of the counterintelligence game during the tumultuous days of World War II. Recruited more for their imagination and dramatic flair than any experience in the spy business, the Englishmen gossiped, bugged and often hilariously bungled their way across Washington, doing their best to carry out their cloak-and-dagger assignments.
