LIBRARY NEWS
By Mary Ann McGrath
There are still a few openings in the Spanish Story Hour to be held today, Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Abington Community Library.
Students who are currently enrolled in Spanish classes at Abington Heights High School are coordinating the story time, which is recommended for children attending kindergarten through third grade. The students plan to read aloud two favorite picture books in English and then translate words and phrases from the stories into Spanish to give youngsters a basic introduction to vocabulary and the sound of the language. The program will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Story Room. A second program is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 9.
The library will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25, and will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day. Regular hours will be effect on Friday (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and through the weekend (Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
NEW BOOKS FOR ADULTS
“Haiku,” by Andrew Vachss. Michael, an addicted gambler; Ranger, a Vietnam veteran; Lamont, erstwhile street-gang warlord turned alcoholic; Target, who speaks by echoing others; and Brewster, an obsessive collector of hardboiled paperbacks, are drawn together by their mutual questions. The answers, as they come, trigger shocking explosions.
“Love and Summer,” by William Trevor. Ellie Dillahan lives a quiet life in the small Irish town of Rathmoye until she meets Florian Kilderry, a young photographer preparing to leave Ireland and his past forever. Their poignant love affair requires Ellie to make an impossible choice between Florian and her husband, a man whose life has been blighted by an unspeakable tragedy.
“To Try Men’s Souls: A Novel of George Washington and the Fight for American Freedom,” by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen. Through the thoughts and private fears of Washington, Thomas Paine and Jonathan Van Dorn, a private in Washington’s army, the darkest days of the American Revolution are illuminated. While Washington prepares his weary troops to cross the frozen Delaware River for the attack on Trenton, Paine is in Philadelphia overseeing the printing of his newest pamphlet, “The Crisis,” and young Private Van Dorn is about to make a decision between staying loyal to the cause or sparing his brother, who has joined up with the British.
