MORE THAN MOVIES
What a diverse weekend we have coming up.
Late on Friday night the Dietrich Theater will be playing, for one evening only, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Join us for this 1975 cult classic starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf at 11:55 p.m. on Oct. 30. Those who attend are invited to come dressed as their favorite characters and there will be lots of dancing and singing along of course. This will be a fun first for us and our concession staff is very excited about it.
Then on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., beautiful music will fill the Dietrich during the Sweeny and Steveskey Classical Guitar concert. During this performance, they will explore the history of classical guitar’s rich repertoire from the English lute music of Shakespearean times to the Baroque and Romanticism of Germany and the exotic and enchanting music of 19th and 20th century Spain.
Paul Sweeny and Jay Steveskey absolutely delighted us last fall with their performance, and we are thrilled that this duo decided to come back again. I can’t wait to hear them play Spanish and South American folk songs that were arranged by Len Williams and, of course, Manuel de Falla’s “The Miller’s Dance.” This concert will also feature works by Albeniz, Sor, Tarrega, Weiss, Darr and more. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by calling the theater at 570.996.1500 or at the door. As Fredric Chopin once said, “Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two.”
Then on Monday, the Dietrich will start some new classes. The Dietrich’s Esther Harmatz will be teaching Jewelry Making: Intermediate Glass Fusing, where students make gorgeous glass pendants or earrings. Participants will learn how to create channels and embed wire bails, as well as how to use glass frits and paints to create unique designs. The fused glass pieces will then be made into the jewelry of the students’ choice. Esther’s Introduction to Glass Fusing is a prerequisite. Intermediate Glass Fusing will be held on Nov. 2 and Nov. 16 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Master basket maker Susi Nuss will also begin teaching her Elves Workshop 2 on Monday, Nov. 2. In this four-week class, you will learn how to make a variety of folded and woven holiday decorations. With this knowledge, you will be able to fill your home with handmade decorations this holiday seasons. Classes will be held on Mondays, Nov. 2 to Nov. 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $50 for the series.
Later in November, Susi will be offering a one-day class about twined basketry. Participants ages 16 and up will learn the skills of basic twining while creating a small square to round basket of natural materials. Students are invited to incorporate items into their baskets that they have collected in advance of the session.
Additional materials will be provided. The class will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $60. Call the Dietrich at 570.996.1500 to register.
As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
Erica Rogler is a staff member of the Dietrich Theater.
