MORE THAN MOVIES

November 4

MORE THAN MOVIES Dietrich Theater Erica Rogler

The Dietrich Theater Radio Players are at it again. They are busy preparing for their upcoming live show. This time around the group will perform a full hour-long radio play, which is a first for the group. Usually the Radio Players, comprised of community members ranging in age from teen through adult, perform two half hour shows—one comedy and one drama, but after several years of performances, their director Valerie Paulus thinks they are up to the challenge.

They will be performing “You Can’t Take it With You” by Mark Hart and George S. Kaufman. It first aired on Oct. 2, 1939. According to radio player Barbara Jones, “There are a lot of funny characters in the play which makes it so enjoyable to rehearse.” They will use authentic sound effects by Bob Kulow, the master of creative sound effects and there will be harmonica and xylophone playing in the show. Save the date of Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. for their performance. Admission is free and you won’t be disappointed. It will definitely be an experience in the “theater of the mind.”

During the week of Nov. 9, the Dietrich will be starting up its November classes. Young artists will not want to miss out on Amy Colley’s Mask Making workshops for children ages three to five years old. During these classes, little ones will learn about different masks and what they are used for.

Children will also create their own masks with lots of texture, color and dimension. I am always amazed by the variety of materials Amy has the students work with including feathers, straws, pompoms and more! Preschoolers will meet at the Dietrich on Thursdays, Nov. 12, through Dec. 10 from noon to 12:45 p.m. and the Mommy and Me class will be held on Fridays, Nov. 13 through Dec. 11 from 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. Admission is $35.

For school age children, the Dietrich will be hosting the ever-popular Mixed Media series. In these classes students will explore an array of the arts from pottery, to painting, to collage, to drawing, to sculpting. As they experience the arts first-hand they will also learn about famous artists. Children ages nine to 12 will meet on Thursdays with instructor Steve Colley from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Amy Colley will teach Friday classes from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for students ages five to eight. Admission is $35.

For adults and teens, Steve Colley will be teaching Pottery and Sculpture in November. In this class, students will learn to work on potter’s wheels and will learn hand-building (coil and slab) techniques. They will also glaze and fire their pottery. Pottery classes are held on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $50 for four classes. Materials are included.

At the end of the month, Esther Harmatz will be teaching an Introduction to Stained Glass class. On Monday, Nov. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m., students will learn the basics of working with glass to create stained glass pieces. They will work with a design, cut glass, polish, foil wrap and solder. All supplies and equipment will be provided. Admission is $55 and students can register by calling 570.996.1500. As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!

Erica Rogler is a staff member for the Dietrich Theater.
