Lackawanna County Commissioners Michael J. Washo, Corey D. O’Brien and A.J. Munchak recently presented Certificates of Recognition to a seven –year- old Scranton boy, Benjamin J. Mushak, and a veteran 911 dispatcher, Thomas McLaine, in honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Mushak called 911 on March 26 when his mother, Dana, collapsed at their West Scranton home. McLaine was the dispatcher who took the call. Both remained calm despite the pressure of the situation. McLaine talked Mushak through the questions that he needed answered regarding the location of the emergency and the overall situation. Mushak not only gave the necessary information, he also made sure the door was unlocked for the ambulance crew. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week was created by Congress in the early 1990s to recognize the dedicated men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. Shown are, from left, front: Samantha Mushak, Jacob Mushak and Benjamin J. Mushak. Back: Commissioner Michael J. Washo, dispatcher Thomas McLaine and Commissioner Corey D. O’Brien.
