Bartending to benefit Cancer Survivor Park

On Saturday, March 7, members of the Leadership Lackawanna Class of 2009 will host “Slinging Drinks for a Cause,” a Celebrity Bartending fundraiser beginning at 9 p.m., at The Stone Elephant, 415 Lackawanna Ave, Olyphant.

The event will feature the band Crush. Local celebrities bartending for the cause will include: Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O’Brien, WNEP 16 weekend sports anchor Sharla McBride, The Weekender General Manager and Style Columnist Rachel Pugh and 97.9 X on-air personality Zoey.

Cost is a $5 cover. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the rebirth and restoration of the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute Cancer Survivor’s Park at McDade Park, Scranton.

“I am honored to be part of such a worthy cause. Although I lack complete bartending skills and can just barely make a decent cup of coffee, I’m hoping the public will still dig deep in their pockets and fill my tip jar, all of it which will be donated to the restoration of the park,” said Celebrity Bartender Rachel A. Pugh, of the Weekender.

“I have a dear friend who is a cancer survivor and I thought of him the minute I was asked to get involved. This night is for him and all the local community members plagued by this disease,” added Pugh.

Leadership Lackawanna is considered northeastern Pennsylvania’s premier leadership development program for emerging professionals. Established in 1982, it is a program of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce. Leadership Lackawanna fosters the development of community leaders by providing participants with leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and an enhanced understanding of the issues and topics relevant to the Greater Scranton area through various monthly sessions including community development, economic development, government, health care, law, education, quality of life, sustainability, history and media. These sessions are held one weekday each month, and are facilitated by widely recognized specialists from various disciplines. In addition to the monthly sessions, participants work on group projects to enhance their leadership skills.
