Murphy began her career as a registered nurse at Moses Taylor Hospital in 1977. Holding multiple positions throughout her tenure, Murphy was the founder and CEO of Physicians Health Alliance and vice president of Planning and Managed Care.
The Moses Taylor Health Care System Board of Trustees announced the selection of Karen M. Murphy, R.N., Ph.D., to succeed Harold E. Anderson, as president and CEO of Moses Taylor Health Care System. Dr. Murphy will assume her new leadership role in October.
In naming Murphy to the post, Moses Taylor Board chairman Douglas G. Allen said, “Following a national search for the position, the members of the board believed that Dr. Murphy’s experience, vision and ability to face challenges were a perfect fit to bring Moses Taylor forward.”
“I am honored that the board of directors selected me to lead the Moses Taylor System,” said Murphy. “While these are challenging times, I am optimistic that Moses Taylor is well positioned to play a key role in ensuring a high quality, sustainable health-care delivery system that will continue to serve our community for the next generation.”
Murphy began her career as a registered nurse at Moses Taylor Hospital in 1977. Holding multiple positions throughout her tenure, Murphy was the founder and CEO of Physicians Health Alliance and vice president of Planning and Managed Care. She has also served as a consultant for local and national health care organizations.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Murphy earned her Doctor of philosophy in business administration from Temple University’s Fox School of Business, with a concentration in Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management. In addition, she received a Master of Business Administration from Marywood University and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Scranton. She was granted a diploma as a registered nurse from the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing, where she received the award for highest academic achievement and excellence in medical surgical nursing. She is a graduate of Dunmore High School.
A member of a number of professional organizations, including Academy Health, Health Information Technology Interest Group Steering Committee, a Senior Fellow in the Thomas Jefferson University School of Population Health and a member of the Steering Committee for Leapfrog Group Hospital Rewards Program, she also serves on the External Advisory Committee for the University of Scranton MHA Program and Marywood University Physicians Assistant Program. She is a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Scranton, and is a clinical faculty member at The Commonwealth Medical College, as well as a national speaker and author on health industry related issues.
The daughter of Richard and Theresa O’Donnell, she and her husband, Martin, reside in Clarks Summit. They are the parents of two children, Tara, New York City, and Timothy, Bethlehem.
