The Rotary Club of the Abingtons announced that it will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks display on July 3 at the Abington Heights Middle School, located on Newton Ransom Blvd.
The event has been a community favorite for over 20 years, drawing in crowds from 3,000 to 5,000. Providing free admission, the Rotary Club views the yearly event as a way to say thank you to the community who helps them out all year long.
“We’re not looking to make a profit, we’re just trying to break even on the cost of the fireworks,” said fireworks chairman Ed Nuzzaci.
“It’s a community event, one of the few that the entire community can take part in.”
But it’s not just money for the fireworks the Rotary Club donates, it’s also their time. In addition to Nuzzaci, a committee made up Chuck Parry, Trip Crowley and Steve Selige is busy behind the scenes, securing the fireworks contract, setting up tents and organizing vendors, to make sure this event is a success every year.
Thankfully, they have found a number of people within the community who were eager to help the Rotary, like the Abington Heights Middle School, who have played host to the event since its conception.
“We’ve held it at the middle school since the event began. They’ve been excellent. All they ask is that there’s no alcohol, which there isn’t, we don’t serve alcohol and that we clean the place up after we’re done. They’ve been very cooperative with us over the years, so have the police department and fire department,” said Nuzzaci.
The Rotary Club will be selling food, beverages and other items starting at 5:30 p.m., with the fireworks set to start at dusk. A rain date is Sunday, July 5. Abington Heights Middle School is located at 1555 Newton Ransom Blvd.
