Tuesday, November 11: Abington Memorial Post 7069 annual Veterans’ Day Service at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, at 7:30 p.m. Those in attendance are invited back to the VFW, 409 Winola Rd. for a free buffet. Info: 587-5663.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced all driver license and photo centers, including its full-service center in Harrisburg, will be closed on Veterans Day. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services Web site: www.dmv.state.pa.us< http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/>. There are no additional fees for using online services.

November 15: Arrival of Santa to his winter cottage home at Viewmont Mall Center Court. Santa will be available for photos and visits from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Children visiting Santa during his first day at Viewmont Mall will receive a free Li’l Kinz while supplies last. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., children will enjoy free face painting and balloon twisting, and can color their very own “Cookies for Santa” plate. Photos with Santa hours: Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Open House, Abington Heights Community Celebration at South Abington Elementary School, 640 Northern Boulevard, in Chinchilla. 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. South Abington Elementary School has been named a Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education.

Who’s the boss? The Abington Community Library, in collaboration with the Abington Heights Middle School and Child Psychologists, Dr. Gloria Jurkowitz and Dr. Joel Cahn, presents a series, “Parenting: The Most Important Job You’ll Ever Love,” 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The first presentation, by Dr. Gloria Jurkowitz, is entitled The Role of the 21st Century Parent. Interactive program will be centered upon communicating, finding time to connect with your busy schedules and theirs, setting boundaries, dealing with stress, and a question and answer portion. Supervision will be provided for children five years of age and older. Subsequent presentations include Dealing with the 21st Century Child and three other topics to be determined by attendees. November 7: Mini-Thon, Dance-a-Thon, at Lackawanna College Student Union. Cost: Dance contestant registration minimum pledge: Students, $15; Adults, $25. General admission (non-contestants): $30. Pasta Dinner, 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sawtelle Auditorium of Covenant Presbyterian Church, 550 Madison Avenue in Scranton (corner of Madison and Olive Street). Take-outs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Cost: Donation, $8 for adults; $4 for children 10 and under. The meal includes entree, salad, bread, beverage and dessert. TV-style game show that presents learning, at 6:30 p.m., at The Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center. Students participate, learn and win by answering not-so-trivial trivia questions. Prizes awarded at every show. Every participant receives a show souvenir. Cost: $5 adults, $3 students. Tickets at the door. Basket raffle and refreshments available. The Scranton Pocono Radio Klub is offering a two -session beginners Amateur Radio Class, also Nov. 15, at the Abington Area Community Library in Clarks Summit from noon to 4 p.m. Students will learn the basic regulations governing international communications, simple electronic concepts and operating procedures.At the completion of the second session students will be able to take the Technician examination which allows new hams voice privileges on VHF and UHF frequencies. Local volunteer examiners who have been certified by the Federal Communications Commission will administer the ham exams at the conclusion of the second session. The actual FCC license takes about ten weeks to be issued and is issued without charge. The examination costs approximately $14. Community Ham Dinner and Silent Auction, sponsored by Friends of Bill Ogden, who has been diagnosed with Advanced Acute Leukemia. Alliance Landfill “Info Expos,” from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Waste Management’s Old Forge office, 230 S. Expo visitors also will be able to receive information about Alliance’s Area 2A expansion project, its International Standards Organization 14001 certification, work to create and improve wildlife habitat, and environmental education programs, and Taylor Borough’s Colliery Project. “The Importance of Living Wills and Healthcare Power of Attorney,” presented by Jane Carlonas, Esquire at Hospice of the Sacred Heart’s monthly Caregiver Support Group meeting, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Education, 340 Montage Mountain Road in Moosic. Cost: Free and is part of the Hospice of the Sacred’s Heart’s monthly caregiver support group meetings. This group meets the second Wednesday every month from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Education. November 14: Abington Business and Professional Holiday Open House, through Sunday, Nov. 16. On Saturday, Nov. 17, the festivities will include a day of fun in downtown. Santa will be visiting downtown and posing for “take your own” photos in different locations throughout the day. Penn State Cooperative Extension in partnership with the Lackawanna County Conservation District is offering a drinking water protection program for landowners who may be located near existing or future natural gas well drilling activity.
