Pennsylvania Governor’s Institute for Educators, July 29, 30 and 31, at Keystone College in La Plume. The Governor’s Institute for Educators is part of a series of summer professional education programs designed to create opportunities for educators to develop knowledge in specific areas, including pre-kindergarten children and school improvement issues.

Soccer Coaching workshop, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Long Center and Fitzpatrick Field at the University of Scranton. The course will cover the principles of positive coaching, motivation, fostering confidence, team building, safety and first aid, and character development through sport. The workshop will also include lecture and demonstration of practice drills and techniques for teaching passing, shooting dribbling, and more advanced soccer skills. Lithuanian Heritage Day, from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Anthracite Heritage Museum, McDade Park, Scranton. Museum curators, board, staff and volunteers have put together a program that will pay particular respect to American Jewish Lithuanians. August 4: Adult literacy volunteer Tutor Training workshop, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., on August 4, 6, 11, 13 and 18 at 2013 Boulevard Avenue, Suite One, in Scranton. August 5: Lackawanna County Boys and Girls Junior Golf Tournament, at the Scranton Municipal Golf Course, 1099 Golf Club Road, Lake Ariel. Abington Heights Fall Sports Sign up & Physicals, 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the High School Field House. All students interested in trying out for a fall sport should come to sign up for the team they wish to join. A physician will be available to give a sports physical at this time. Cost: $15 for physical. Practice/Tryouts will begin on August 17.

50th Reunion for the Venard Maryknoll Preparatory College in South Abington Township, August 7 to August 9 and will include time on campus Saturday, August 8. The school occupied the current site of Baptist Bible College and Seminary. Baptist Bible purchased the campus from the Maryknoll Fathers in 1968. “Venard 63” will bring together the freshmen classes of 1959 and 1960 from the school. More than 70 people from across the country are expected to attend. Baptist Bible will host the group for softball and volleyball games, a picnic lunch and a campus tour. August 9: 14th Annual Pocono Chicken Wing-Off to benefit Monroe County Meals on Wheels at Fernwood Hotel and Resort, noon to 4 p.m. on the Fernwood Great Lawn. Cost: Festival attendees pay as they go for wings, beverages and other food. Proceeds from the wings sold will go to Meals on Wheels, which generates over $12,000 from the event annually. Fourth Annual Sunday in the Park, 12 to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Everhart Museum, 1901 Mulberry Street, Scranton. This is a collaborative event organized by the Everhart Museum, Lackawanna County Library System, and the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. Activities will include hands-on craft projects, face-painting, games, raffles, live musical performances and food vendors. August 10: Benefit Dinner for Trooper Joshua Miller’s Family, 6 p.m. at Meadowbrook Inn, Route 314, Cherry Lane Road, Tannersville. Escoffier Dinner hosted by the American Culinary Federation Professional Chefs of Northeast Pennsylvania. Champagne and hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a seven course dinner with paired wines featuring French delicacies including foie gras, sweetbreads, caviar, and truffles. All proceeds from this Dinner will benefit the wife and children of Trooper Joshua Miller, a Pittston Township resident, who was killed in the line of duty on June 7. August 16: Endure For a Cure, at Kirby Park, Wilkes-Barre. The first annual bike ride in NEPA benefits the American Cancer Society. September 12: Steam Excursion to the Tunkhannock Viaduct, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from the Steamtown National Historic Site, 150 S. Washington Avenue, Scranton. The excursion date coincides with the Borough of Nicholson’s “Bridge Day” and commemorates the 94th anniversary of the viaduct. Train departs at 1 p.m. for a planned arrival and stop on the bridge from 2 to 2:15 p.m. to view the beautiful Endless Mountains and its wildlife. September 15: Eleventh Annual “Bringing the World to Northeastern Pennsylvania”, 8 to 11:30 a.m. at The Woodlands Inn and Resort, Wilkes-Barre.
