Cell Phone Collection, Abington Heights High School Students against Destructive Decisions are collecting cell phones at the High School. All cell phones are cleared and programmed with 911 for use by the elderly. The phones may be dropped off in the main office of the High School.
Holiday Mail for Heroes, between Nov. 2 and Dec. 7, the public is invited to send a “touch of home” through holiday cards that contain messages of cheer and appreciation. The Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards and deliver them to military bases and hospitals, veterans’ hospitals and other locations during the holidays. November 6: African Children’s Choir will be perform a free community concert in Scranton at 7 p.m., at Hickory Street United Presbyterian Church, 435 Hickory Street, Scranton. For the past 25 years, the African Children’s Choir has entertained millions, raising awareness of the plight of Africa’s most vulnerable, but also showing the beauty, dignity and potential of each African child. Choir currently cares for over 7,000 children in Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria and Ghana. Johnson College offering State Inspection Classes, continue Nov. 12, 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Johnson College’s Automotive Center at 3427 North Main Ave, Scranton. November 13: Timmy’s Town Center Museum opening, at The Mall At Steamtown with an open house from 5 to 9 p.m., coinciding with Santa’s arrival at the mall. TTC is in memory of Timmy Kelly, the son of Timothy Kelly, Esq. and Lexie McFarland Kelly, TTC’s board president and co-founder along with her husband. Timmy’s Town Center is modeled after the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, a favorite place and refuge for Timmy Kelly while he was undergoing chemotherapy treatments in Philadelphia. December 13: German Christmas Celebration, 2:00 p.m. at the Anthracite Heritage Museum, McDade Park, Scranton. A 90 minute program will offer participants the opportunity to see a toy demonstration, enjoy holiday music activities, hear German folk-lore, take a photo with St. Nicholas & Ruprecht, sample holiday treats, and more. All ages are welcome. Space is limited and reservation is required by Friday, December 11, 2009. A $7.00 fee per person includes the program and admission to the exhibit, Anthracite People.
