As autumn gets crowded out by an unseasonably insistent cold snap, we can find ourselves longing for a diversion, something—anything—to get us out of the house. Enter the Abington Heights Civic League, a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the community.
SCRANTON—In less than a year, the Vintage Theater, in downtown Scranton, has experienced steady growth. This Friday, Nov. 6, its evolution continues with the opening of its cafe.

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP.– Nichols Village Hotel and Spa, 1101 Northern Blvd., S. Abington Twp., is making strides to be more of a destination than a hotel and its staff wants to show the community the progress.
Matt Fiegleman, 17, is a Life Scout with Clarks Green Troop 251 who is refurbishing the bleachers at Abington Heights Middle School. His parents are Laurie and Billy Fiegleman and his Scoutmaster is Mike Minello. Matt is currently serving as a Patrol Leader in his troop, which consists of 35 boys. His Eagle Project had to be approved first by the school board, then by Scout House in Moosic before work could begin. The first phase of his project was Sunday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There were nine boys in attendance and three adults. The second phase of the project will be Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will involve painting the railing white, sanding the wooden seats and replacing the wood on the seats that are in bad shape.
This column is supposed to be about the countryside, so why am I writing about sidewalks this month? After all, sidewalks are a quintessential marker of the urban environment. But they can do something very powerful for the countryside: they can help keep it intact.
Residents of Golden Living Center Summit joined Aseracare Hospice to celebrate “Pinked Day” on Oct. 19. Residents created pink ribbons to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The event proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Based on unofficial election results, with 117 of 163 county precincts reporting, Margaret Bisignani Moyle defeated Republican challenger Frank Castellano in their race for a vacant seat in the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas, earning 56.18 percent of the vote.
Third grade students of Abington Heights in Waverly Elementary School and Clarks Summit Elementary School raised $1,695 in the school’s “Walk for Diabetes,” on Friday, Oct. 16.
