Scranton woman gets jail time for aiding drug ring

Dennis C. Pfannenschmidt, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, announced that a 30-year-old Scranton woman, who aided a New Jersey to-Pennsylvania heroin trafficking operation, was sentenced Friday to 45 months in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Edwin M. Kosik.

Unofficial results from the November 3 general election have been made public by the Lackawanna County Bureau of Elections.

Timmy’s Town Center open Nov. 13

The children’s museum, Timmy’s Town Center (TTC) will open its doors on Friday, Nov. 13, at The Mall at Steamtown with an open house from 5 to 9 p.m., coinciding with Santa’s arrival at the mall. Admission is free that evening. TTC is in memory of Timmy Kelly, the son of Timothy Kelly, Esq. and Lexie McFarland Kelly.

Bleachers receive facelift

Matt Fiegleman, 17, is a Life Scout with Clarks Green Troop 251 who is refurbishing the bleachers at Abington Heights Middle School. His parents are Laurie and Billy Fiegleman and his Scoutmaster is Mike Minello. Matt is currently serving as a Patrol Leader in his troop, which consists of 35 boys. His Eagle Project had to be approved first by the school board, then by Scout House in Moosic before work could begin. The first phase of his project was Sunday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There were nine boys in attendance and three adults. The second phase of the project will be Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will involve painting the railing white, sanding the wooden seats and replacing the wood on the seats that are in bad shape.

Hearing postponed for alleged prowler

A preliminary hearing for an alleged prowler has been postponed in Lackawanna County Court, according to a Lackawanna County Deputy District.

RANSOM TWP. – Ransom Township board of supervisors urges residents to contact their state representative and ask him to oppose a house bill that would impose a fee on municipalities for the patrol services provided by state police.

S. Abington approves addition to BBC

SOUTH ABINGTON TWP. - South Abington Township Supervisors unanimously approved a $4.5 million addition to Baptist Bible College and Seminary’s student center at its Oct. 26 meeting. The only hitch with the approval is based on college officials getting back to the supervisors with a detailed landscaping plan.

Abington Community Library celebrates November, National Novel Writing Month with a Teen Write-In. CLARKS SUMMIT- As Clarks Summit Borough Council evaluated options in the ongoing proceedings involving the closure of Grandview Street, it heard from an expert at the monthly work session last Tuesday evening, Oct. 27.

Abington Heights Middle School students in seventh and eighth grades attended an assembly program titled “Cyber-Smarts,” featuring Katie Koestner, a national expert on student safety and teen relationship culture. She has appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine, The Oprah Winfrey Show, NBC Nightly News, Larry King Live and Good Morning America.

Based on unofficial election results, with 117 of 163 county precincts reporting, Margaret Bisignani Moyle defeated Republican challenger Frank Castellano in their race for a vacant seat in the Lackawanna County Court of Common Pleas, earning 56.18 percent of the vote.

Students “Walk for Diabetes”

Third grade students of Abington Heights in Waverly Elementary School and Clarks Summit Elementary School raised $1,695 in the school’s “Walk for Diabetes,” on Friday, Oct. 16.
