Always in Stitches

Ben Freda Abington Journal Correspondent

CLARKS SUMMIT- Always in Stitches, a quilting group that meets every Tuesday at the Abington Community Library, is raising funds by raffling a quilt that they have made. The quilt, made of traditional 1860s square patterns done in earth tones, is a thank-you gift for bringing RSVP Volunteer Peg Winter to the library to teach basic quilting techniques.

Winter, an experienced quilter, has been teaching quilting classes for beginners since September 2006 to women who never quilted or sewn before and end up learning a tremendous amount. Prior to this quilt, Winter and her group had made an abstract quilt last year that is on permanent display at the Ryon Community Room.

The quilt will be on display for The Friends of the Abington Community Library members only on Preview Night, Friday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m. Friends is a volunteer-based organization designed to support the library by fostering interest in books and reading, focusing attention on library services, encouraging gifts of books and collections, and presenting programs of interest to the community members. Everyone who attends the Preview Night must have a valid Friends membership card, which can be purchased that night for $5 per individual or $10 per family.

The quilt will be on display for the public on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church. Raffle tickets are $2 each or three for $5. This will raise funds to buy new tables for the Ryon Community Room, which is a room in the Abington Community Library dedicated to former trustee John Ryon. The goal is $3,000.

After Oct. 11, the quilt will be displayed at the library until it is raffled off on April 1, 2009. The quilters are doing their part to make the fundraiser a success.

“I am completely humbled by the generosity and camaraderie of these women, Peg Winter especially,” said Leah Ducato Rudolph, director of the library. “This is the second quilt that they have made for the library. The other is on permanent display. It means a lot when groups who utilize the library give something back as they have done. They are truly a remarkable group of women.”
