Church of the Epiphany celebrates birthday

Mauri Rapp Abington Journal Correspondent

For many of us, the 2008 holiday season is winding down. But for Church of the Epiphany in Glenburn, several events are yet to come to celebrate the season.

On Sunday, Jan. 4, the children’s Christmas pageant will take place at 9 a.m. in the Church of the Epiphany parish hall. This event was originally scheduled for December 21 but was postponed due to inclement weather. Following the pageant will be the annual “Christmas Lessons and Carols” worship service. According to committee member Rachel Baildon, adults and children from the parish will read Bible passages and lead choral and congregational music. “It’s a chance for us to give the minister the opportunity to relax,” she joked. Each reading will be succeeded by a selection from one of the parish choirs.

Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 6, to celebrate the day of Epiphany, which is the church’s birthday celebration, the Church of the Epiphany will hold its annual chili cook-off at 6 p.m. The public is invited to join and bring favorite chili recipes, as well as salads, muffins and other foods to accompany the chili. The cook-off will be immediately followed by the church’s traditional Burning of the Greens bonfire ceremony. Wreathes and trees from the church will be burned and attendees are invited to bring their own greenery to be burned in the bonfire as well. Baildon said that anyone who is tired or hungry is welcome to attend the events for refreshment and renewal.

The Church of the Epiphany is an Episcopal church located in Glenburn on Church Hill Road, approximately two miles outside of Clarks Summit. For details, visit www.epiphanyglenburn.com.
