CLARKS SUMMIT - At the Clarks Summit Fire Co. Open House/Chicken BBQ, people will learn more than just ‘stop, drop, and roll.’ On Saturday October 11, Fire Prevention Week at the Clarks Summit Fire Co. comes to an end with their annual open house, the one day a year people can tour the firehouse.
Children watch a 911 presentation.
Fire prevention mascot Smokey the Bear will also visit the firehouse. A South Abington Police K-9 unit demonstration will occur from 2:30 to 3:30pm. There will also be a sign-up for a Clarks Summit Fire Co. membership. “We’re hoping to bolster our ranks with a membership drive. Persons of any age or interest are welcome to join. Being a member doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a fire fighter or EMT. We can always use help in all aspects of the fire company and auxiliary,” said Michael and Christine Ishler.
Child ID kits will be given to the kids from Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office. Also for the kids, there will be a scavenger hunt, in which they will be searching for items inside the building and out. This game will give the kids the opportunity to get to know the station as well as its members. The winners of the scavenger hunt will receive a complimentary ‘goodie’ from the Joseph A. Hall Auxiliary. Students of the Abington School District, including home school, are eligible for a pizza party contest. The individual class with the most students, who attends and signs in the open house, will win pizza provided and delivered by the Joseph A. Hall Auxiliary. The delivery will be scheduled with the winning class.
New this year, the chicken barbecue, which will be just outside the firehouse, will be provided and cooked by Backyard Party Solutions, a local, custom and grilling and barbecuing business in Ransom Township. The chicken barbecue provides a meal consisting of a half chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, and a roll. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children.
