The traditions, celebrations and art of Latin America will be explored at the Everhart Museum on Sunday, Nov. 1 from 1o 4 p.m. for Day of the Dead Community Day.
The day’s activities will highlight Day of the Dead celebrations throughout the Americas and serve as a complement to the museum’s current temporary Day of the Dead: Art & Culture in the Americas exhibit.
Exhibition tours, hands-on activities, music, dancing and demonstrations inspired by Day of the Dead: Art & Culture in the Americas will be presented.
Community partners such as Anthology Books, the CYC of Luzerne County, Friends of the Poor, Mariachi Tequila, Nativity of Our Lord Church and Timmy’s Town Center will be on hand to provide educational activities throughout the afternoon.
The RJG Latino Multi-Cultural Dance Group will perform traditional dances from the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Puerto Rico and the USA at 1:15 and 2:30 p.m.
The Steamtown National Historic Site will present a slideshow presentation about Hispanic heritage in our parks at 1:30 and 3 p.m.
At 3:15 p.m., curator, Nezka Pfeifer, will guide a tour of the Day of the Dead: Art & Culture in the Americas exhibit.
And thought out the afternoon, the public may assist Pfeifer, and University of Scranton Spanish instructor, Ignacio Diaz, as they build a community ofrenda (altar). Bring a memento to honor a loved one to leave on the altar.
Activities are included in the cost of general admission to the museum and no reservations are required.
