Fireworks, not too far down the road

Nathan Urie Abington Journal Reporter

TUNKHANNOCK - With the Fourth of July a few days away, you may not be forced to rush to pick up fireworks or else be disappointed with selection. A few miles down the road there is a store which sells fireworks, from little snappers to fountains and mortars.

Coney Island Fireworks, which opened in Tunkhannock at 1 Charles Plaza just after Memorial Day, carries what you might want to include for holiday activities.

“We have a very large selection and a lot of new brands,” said Jennifer Felton, who manages the store. “We have the best variety and more products.”

With a walk around the store, it’s possible to find pre-loaded aerial tubes to sparklers which spin on the ground. Some have added features like “Air Troops,” which project a small soldier that parachutes back to the ground.

“This is very popular for children,” she said, but wanted to remind future customers that they must be 18 to enter the store and use each product with an adult if underage.

Owner Rob Schmidt, who relocated his business from Long Island, NY, has products in the store which project 100 to 16,000 shot assemblies.

“This has been his dream. This is all he ever wanted,” Felton said.

Other products in the store include Roman Candles, 200 to 500 gram cakes, rockets, reloadable artillery and novelty items. A permit to purchase is required for some, but not all, items.

Before you decide to buy or visit, Coney Island has a web site set up for customers to view the products. To see Coney Island possibilities for the July 4 holiday and for more information, visit www.coneyislandfireworks.com or call 570.836.8851.

Employees of Coney Island will also be at the Wyoming County Fair Grounds from six to midnight on July 4 for a fireworks display.
