LIBRARY NEWS
“Chill Out and Read!” is the theme chosen for the 2009 Winter Reading Club for boys and girls at the Abington Community Library and other members of the Lackawanna County Library System.
Set to begin on Monday, Jan. 12, the program will last for six weeks, with the goal of encouraging youngsters and their parents to visit the library frequently to choose books to occupy their time while winter weather keeps them indoors.
The library will have a registration sheet to be signed by each participant beginning on Monday. On subsequent visits to the library, each child will be given a paper “snowball” name tag to add to a special display in the Children’s Room with the objective of adding as many “snowballs” as possible for the duration of the program. They are encouraged to browse the shelves and read in the library and then select books to check out and read at home. They will be given a Reading Log on which to note the time spent reading or being read to each day. This log will be turned in at the conclusion of the program in exchange for a Certificate of Participation. Plans are being made for a special Ending Event on Saturday, Feb. 21, featuring carnival games and other activities. Children who participate in “Chill Out and Read!” will also be eligible to win prizes.
It’s not too late to register children for one of the library’s story hours. The winter session will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 13 and Thursday, Jan. 15 for five weeks. Children ages three through five years will meet on Tuesdays, either from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. On Thursday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., children who are two and three years old will get together in the Story Room. Each story time features read-out-louds from the picture book collection, finger plays and songs and a simple craft related to one of the books. Staff members Mary Ann McGrath and Mary Yeager are in charge of the programs. Call the library at 587-3440 or stop in the Children’s Room to register.
Registration is not required for the library’s “1-2-3 Story and Play Time,” which is held on alternate Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 12 months to three years old. Children enjoy a short time for play and socialization before they are encouraged to sit quietly and listen to a story. This program is geared to introducing children to the library setting and promoting early listening skills. The winter series will kick off on Friday, Jan. 16. Call for further information.
UPCOMING: The January “Make-It, Take-It Craft Time” will feature Chinese New Year crafts. Drop in any time between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Pre-registration is appreciated. For ages three to 10 years.
