Newton Township negotiates new garbage contract

Newton Township supervisors announced at their monthly meeting Monday, Jan. 5, the township has negotiated a garbage contract with Mascaro and Sons. The township had a contract with Waste Management, which ended on December 31. The board urged residents if they receive a bill from Waste Management for 2009 not to pay it. Any resident who has should call Waste Management and alert them of the mistake. Garbage pickup will be Tuesdays.

The board also heard from Pete Hrobuchak of Hrobuchak Lawn and Garden, who is interested in the letting a new business that would repair small engines, open in the his former Lawn and Garden location.

Hrobuchak closed the store at 2041 Milwaukee Rd., Newton Ransom, in 2001 but recently rented it. The land is located in an agricultural district, and the supervisors explained that “of the things allowed in an agricultural district, this is not one of them,” said Scott Haan, code enforcement officer.

The supervisors explained that the renter will have to file for a hearing with the zoning board for permission to run the business in the building. The board also made a request to Hrobuchak that two trailers sitting on the property be moved. Hrobuchak agreed.
