George Gilbert Schumacher, 76, of Clarks Summit, died Saturday, April 12, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. His wife is Elizabeth “Betty” Briel. The couple would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary September 5.
Born Feb. 23, 1932, in Scranton, son of the late Louis and Blanche Cawley Schumacher, he graduated from Archbald High School in 1950 and attended East Stroudsburg State College. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He had a lifelong career in radio broadcasting and was known by many as “Double G” or “George Gilbert.” He began his radio career at WKOP, Binghamton, NY. He was a formulating member of the WARM Radio team, having been a disc jockey and later production manager from 1958 to 1960. He advanced his career in 1960 to WIBG Radio, Philadelphia, as one of the highest- rated disc jockeys in the area. In 1963, George returned to WARM. An original member of the “Sensational Seven,” he was responsible for news, shows, public service and production of commercials, remotes and appearances. He hosted many “WARM Days” at Rocky Glen Park, attracting 25,000 people to listen to top musical artists. During his tenure at WARM from 1963 to 1979, he served as program director, in sports and news directorships, as operations manager, as station operations manager and general manager. In 1979, George was general manager at WRAK/WKSB-FM, Williamsport. In 1986, he transferred to WZLD-FM, Columbia, S.C., to serve as general manager. He returned to Clarks Summit in 1989, and his career also included teaching broadcasting at Marywood University. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and enjoyed collecting model antique cars. As a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, he was one of the first parishioners to serve as lector. He also served on the advisory board of the Abington Senior Center. George was surrounded by his family at his death, and his loving wife was devoted to him. He will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved him.
Also surviving are a son, George Schumacher and wife, Jeanne, East Lemon; five daughters, Marie Genuario and husband, Mark, Collegeville; Karen Adams and husband, John, Pensacola, FL; Elaine Smith and husband, Jay, Clarks Summit; Elizabeth “Betsey” Gervasi and husband, Anthony, Burlington NJ; and Jennifer McKinley and husband, Brian, Simpsonville, SC; a brother, Robert Schumacher and wife, Rita, Athens, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday, April 17, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Our lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit, to be celebrated by Monsignor James J. McGarry. Those attending the funeral are requested to go directly to the church. The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m. at Jennings Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services, 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
