George R. Winters

July 24, 2009

George R. Winters, 81, of Clarks Summit, died Friday, July 24, in Hospice Community Care, Dunmore.

Born Nov. 16, 1927, in Scranton, son of the late Walter and Gertrude Daniels Winters, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and received his bachelor’s degree in business. He was a Clarks Summit resident for more than 50 years, having moved from Scranton. His professional career was in automotive dealership in the area. He managed Scranton Buick for most of his career and, in later years, he was manager of Sherwood Chevrolet Pontiac Buick GMC, Nicholson, before retiring. He was a member of the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, Shriners of North America, R.W. Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Keystone Consistory, Irem Temple, Glen Oak Country Club, the Gravel Pond Association — where he served as past president — and the Abington Senior Center. He was a former member of the Scranton Canoe Club.

George was a cheerful, friendly person whose world was mostly Buicks and golf. An avid golfer, he played in many golf tournaments and achieved nine holes-in-one, of which he was very proud. He enjoyed the natural sighting of Gravel Pond and the many fond memories of happy times shared with his family and friends. His gentle smile will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Winters, Moorestown, NJ; and Gail Sinisko and husband, Michael, Beaufort, SC; three granddaughters, Stephanie Petko and husband, David, and their children, Megan and Lori, Allentown; Heather Woods and husband Jason, and their children, Tristen, Samantha and Marissa, Columbia, SC; and Courtney Fugate and husband, Scott, and their children, Adler and Brinkley, Beaufort. He also was preceded in death by a former wife, Shirley Jeffrey, and a stepdaughter, Judi Jeffrey.

The funeral was to be Sunday in the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit, with services by the Rev. Judy Wanck, pastor. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Community Care, 100 Williams St., Dunmore, PA 18512.
