Helen R. Fountas Earley

Helen R. Fountas Earley, 103, of Clarks Summit, died Monday, Jan. 4, at home. She was the widow of Robert M. Earley, who died Feb. 24, 1990.

She was born Nov. 27, 1906, in Wilkes-Barre, the daughter of the late Peter and Irene Rossiter Fountas. She lived in Clarks Summit for more than 38 years and was formerly of Scranton. She graduated from Scranton Technical High School, where she was salutatorian, and received her teaching certification from West Chester College. Before retirement, she was a teacher for the Scranton School District for more than 42 years at Bancroft Elementary School. She was the oldest living member of Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Clarks Summit, where she was an active volunteer and member of the Women’s Club. She also was a member of the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, Monroe, N.Y., and had served as president, friend and volunteer to the Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence. She was a benefactor of Lourdesmont School; a member of the state and local Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; Lackawanna Chapter, AARP; Century Club of Scranton; Catholic Golden Age; Abington Women’s Club and various area card clubs.

Surviving are nieces, nephews, caregivers and numerous friends making up her extended family. The funeral was to be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of the Snows, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit, by Monsignor James J. McGarry. Interment, St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Pittston. Arrangements from Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave. , Clarks Summit. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lackawanna Branch, Pennsylvania Association for the Blind, 228 Adams Ave., Scranton , PA 18503 .
