John F. “Jack” Floyd, 86, of Glenburn, died Thursday, July 23, in the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital. He was the husband of the late Viola Bell Demming. The couple had been married for more than 52 years.
Born Sept. 17, 1922, in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Freida Rink Floyd. He lived in Glenburn since 1952. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He served in the Army, 11th Armor Division, during World War II in Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was decorated with the honors of Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, European African Middle, Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.He had been a Greyhound bus driver and later was employed by Consumer Coal and Oil Co., Scranton. After retiring, he worked at Pallman’s Farm, South Abington Twp. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit.
A devoted family man, he idolized his family. He was an avid football and Penn State fan. He enjoyed participating in and sharing all the activities with his great-grandchildren. He was always there to lend a helping hand for others and for those who needed a friend. His gentleness will be sadly missed by all who experienced it.
Surviving are two sons, John Floyd, Acushnet, MA and William Floyd and wife, Dolores, Glenburn; five grandsons, David John Floyd, Tunkhannock; John Floyd, South Dartmouth, MA; Richard Allen Floyd, Forest Hills, MD; Steven Robert, Floyd Sr., Clarks Summit; and Jeffery Floyd, FL; four granddaughters, Victoria Callahan, South Dartmouth; Veronica Moore, Raynham, MA; Leah MaCone, Malden, MA and Julie Mello, New Bedford, MA; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca Floyd, Glenburn; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert J. Floyd, who died Aug. 9, 2001; and two sisters, Dorothy Walsh and Helen Flynn.
The funeral was to be Monday, July 27, with Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows, 301 South State St., Clarks Summit. Interment, Fairlawn Cemetery, Dalton, with full military honors. Arrangements from the Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
