Mary R. Markowski

Mary R. Markowski, 97, Clarks Summit and formerly of Throop, died Tuesday night, Oct. 27, at the Lackawanna County Health Care Center. She was the widow of Edward Markowski, who died in 1952.

Markowski was born in Throop and the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Kutis. Prior to retirement, she was employed as a cigar marker for the American Tobacco Co., where she served as the president of the Cigar Union Local 295. She was a devote catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit, and their women’s guild. She was a resident of Clarks Summit for more than 25 years and was very active at the Bedford Apartments, as well as the oldest resident.

She enjoyedtraveling to Disney World and going on cruises with her family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Jaditz, VNA Hospice, Geneva Home Health Care Services and the Lackawanna County Health Care staff who took exceptional care for Mary.

Surviving are a son, Edward Markowski, Seaford, De.; and son-in-law Robert Uscowskas, Taylor, who was her caregiver for 13 years; five grandchildren Greg, Robert Jr., Diane, Linda and Maria; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dolores Uscowskas, and three sisters, Margaret Kutis, Kathryn Kutis and Josephine Zinsky.

A mass of Christian burial was to be held on Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
