Olga M. Zaums

Olga Maxine Kuryloski Zaums, 91, of Clarks Summit, died Thursday, Sept. 3 in St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home. She was the widow of the late Joseph Zaums, who died Aug. 5, 1993. The couple had been married for more than 53 years.

Born May 30, 1918, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Martha Slugoski Kuryloski. Before residing at St. Mary’s Villa, she lived in Clarks Summit since 1979, having moved from Pittsburgh, where she had lived since 1956. She had lived in Overland Park, Kan., for six years, Independence, Mo., for two years and Philadelphia seven years. She was a graduate of Kingston High School and the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts, receiving a degree in fashion design.

She was an active member of Our Lady of the Snows Church and its Friday morning company Bible study group and also served as a Eucharistic minister. Olga was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and her husband collected antiques and for several years owned and operated Olga’s Antiques in Clarks Summit. She loved to volunteer in Pittsburgh, serving with the Ladies of Charity, and in Scranton, serving at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, where she and her husband helped start a used-clothing store and volunteered there for many years. She enjoyed oil painting, knitting and building dollhouses.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. John R. Zaums and wife, Margie, Clarks Summit; Robert W. Zaums and wife, Mary Paul, Waterbury, CT; a daughter, Catherine Toran, Westborough, MA.; eight grandchildren, John and wife, Lisa, Chester Springs; Karen Zaums Galvin and husband, James, Nicholson; Mei Zaums Fekete and husband, John, Los Angeles; Matthew Zaums, Waterbury; Patricia Zaums, Waterbury; Paul Toran, Boston; Michael Toran, Westborough: four great-grandchildren, Natori Zaums, Benjamin Galvin, Holly Galvin and Emily Zaums.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Zaums, in 1958; a grandson, Nicholas Terence Toran, in 1993; two brothers, Eugene and George Kuryloski; and two sisters, Gloria Seebold and Sonia Hughes.

The funeral was to be Saturday, Sept. 5 with Mass at Our Lady of the Snows, 301 S. State St., Clarks Summit, to be celebrated by Monsignor James J. McGarry. Interment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow. Arrangements from Jennings-Calvey Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., 111 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit.
