Geocaching is described by the international hobby Web site www.geocaching.com as "a treasure hunting game where you use a GPS (global positioning system) to hide and seek containers with other participants in the activity." Containers used in the Abington Heights program are not posted on Internet hobby Web sites.
The club teaches students to use handheld GPS systems, cache naming clues and intuition to find items hidden on the grounds of Abington Heights Middle School. Once found, students are encouraged to sign a log sheet inside the container documenting the date and time the item was found. Students are lead by club advisor and Middle School teacher Joe Dorohovech.
According to www.geocaching.com, 1,685 items are hidden in the 18411 zip code area and can be located using the item's latitude and longitude.
