U of S awards eight summer fellowships

Eight University of Scranton students were awarded a President’s Fellowship for Summer Research for 2009. Local researchers include: Lee Ashlin, Dalton, worked with Meghan Rich, Ph.D., Scranton, assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice, to study “Change in the Electric City: Community Views on Downtown Revitalization in Scranton.”

Richard Brzozowski, Pittston, worked with John Deak, Ph.D., Clarks Summit, associate professor of chemistry, to study “The Effects of Ethylene Oxide Chains on Molecular Interactions of Water in Nonionic Reverse Micelles.” Adriana Healey, Edwardsville, worked with Timothy Foley, Ph.D., Clarks Summit, associate professor of chemistry, to study “Characterization of the Oxidation of Thiols on the Enzyme Triose Phosphate Isomerase: A Possible Link between Oxidative Stress and Glucose Metabolism in the Brain.” Benjamin Redan, Tunkhannock, worked with Joe Vinson, Ph.D., Dalton, professor of chemistry, to study “Mechanistic Study of the Legume’s Health Benefits: What are the Active Ingredients for Optimizing Health?”
