Scranton Tennis Club sets open house

The Scranton Tennis Club, which is located on the Morgan Highway in Clarks Summit, will hold an Open House on Saturday, May 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both members and newcomers are welcome to attend. The courts will be open for play, and board members will be available to pair up players who come without partners. Pro Joe McNulty will be on hand to answer questions about his weekly junior clinics and adult lessons, as well as his Junior Tennis Camp, which will be held in late June. Food and refreshments will be provided in cook-out style. The rain date for the event is Sunday, May 20.

The club features a clubhouse and six Har-Tru (clay) tennis courts, and offers unlimited tennis from May to October. There is no initiation fee, and membership rates are $275 for an adult and $390 for a family. The club is offering special discounts for new members through June 30.

The club’s $80 Learn and Play junior membership entitles junior members to five two-hour group lessons with the pro as well as unlimited play on weekdays and on weekends after 1 pm. There is also a league which provides organized play for junior members. “Our main interest is providing children with a positive introduction to the game,” says president Walt Kreidler, “and then helping them find opportunities to develop their skills and increase their enjoyment of the sport.”

There are leagues, round robins, and mixers that give players opportunities to meet new players at their level of play. Social events are held throughout the summer, including a year-end catered dinner. For club members who enjoy competition, the club tournament features singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events for adults and seniors of different playing abilities. The club also sponsors a trip to the U.S. Open in August.

For more information, call Walt Kreidler at 586-4978 or Dave Reel at 942-6927.
