WILKES-BARRE -- Revenge was sweet for Dallas in the District 2 Class 2A boys tennis team semifinals.
But that taste soon turned sour for the Mountaineers in the championship.
Peter Cognetti’s hard-fought sweep in the top singles match Monday triggered a Scranton Prep sweep as the Cavaliers conquered Dallas in the district title match for the second straight season at Kirby Park.
In Class 3A action, Hazleton Area was cut down in the semifinal round by Wallenpaupack.
“They’re a tough team,” Dallas coach Jim Cook said of Prep. “(But) I think we did great. I don’t think we could have done any better than what we did.”
The Mountaineers were delighted just to get there.
That’s because Mark Covert and Tony Bevevino fueled a 3-1 victory over Wyoming Seminary in an earlier semifinal match Monday, allowing the Mountaineers to avenge a season-opening loss at the hands of Sem.
“That was nice to have that win,” Cook said. “It was like a payback match, and that got us into the finals. If there was any team I’d want to beat to get to the finals, it’d be Wyoming Seminary. We know a lot of the kids on that team, the kids all play together through the summer. It was sort of getting the monkey off your back.
“It was nice to get a little bit of payback.”
Dallas’ delight, however, was short-lived in a finals sweep.
The Mountaineers make it more difficult than it appeared for Prep, though.
Covert stood tall at No. 1 singles before suffering his first loss of the season at the hands of Cognetti, 6-4, 6-4. And Ethan Pensak and Eric Fritzches took their No. 2 doubles match to a tiebreaker before falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to the Prep duo of Jason Alford and Jeff DeSanto.
Unbeaten Prep will advance to the pigtail round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs next Tuesday.
“We go in every match focused,” Lennox said. “Obviously, a district championship is very, very important.” Dallas finished its team season at 12-2 overall and will send Covert into the District 2 singles tournament, which will be held Thursday and Friday.
