Abington Little League hosts golf tournament

Cari Tomczyk Abington Journal Correspondent

FACTORYVILLE - The Abington Little League is hosting its first Annual Golf Tournament August 16, at 2 p.m. at Stone Hedge Golf Course, Factoryville. The committee’s main goal is to raise enough money to build a new concession stand that will have new bathrooms and a better view of the field. David Badalamente, Tom Rothenberger, John Swank, all coaches, and Kevin Badalamente, a sponsor for the tournament, sought to do their part in helping the Abington Little League fundraising committee plan such an event. With the approval of Little League President Bob Ayre, the preparations of the event began taking place in the beginning of June. “The biggest reason the fundraiser is a golf tournament is that it has not been done before,” said David Badalamente, who is the head organizer of the event.

Roughly 60 people will be participating in the tournament and there have been 21 sponsors from Clarks Summit. “The support has been outstanding,” said David Badalamente. In the past eight weeks there has been a full crew donating their hard work and time in helping build the new concession stand- from little leaguers, to parents, to the general contractor Frank Lehnert. Not to mention, most of the material has been donated from local supply businesses. This ambitious project is a vast community effort.

Many prizes will be given away. There is even a possibility of winning a new car if a golfer can sink a hole-in-one. “We really want to make the tournament fun so people get excited and remember the event. We want people to look forward to next year,” said Swank. This year, the goal is a new concession stand; but the stand is only the beginning of improving conditions of Ackerly field for the little leaguers. In making this an annual event, the organizers hope to eventually raise enough money for a scoreboard, lights, new lawnmowers, a coaching clinic and field maintenance. “We’re needing big donations. We want to raise as much money as possible,” said David Badalamente.

The tournament welcomes walk-ons the morning of the event. Registration and further information, contact John Swank at 570-575-3899, or check out www.abcdecals.com/golf.

I think the article is well written and concise. The author obviously has a deep literary talent that has yet to be fully utilized. The editor in chief should at the very least consider putting this author on larger more in depth assignments. I look forward to reading more of Cari's work in the future.
