Abington boys win Birchwood Tournament

Jimmy Tressler of Clarks Green, won his first junior tennis tournament at the Birchwood Turkey Classic held at Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Club in Clarks Summit Nov. 20 to 22.

A left -handed 10-year-old, Tressler was ranked 12th in the Eastern Pennsylvania before the tournament. In the semi final he defeated eighth ranked Ryan Hoffman of Allentown 6-0, 6-2.

In the finals Tressler defeated second ranked Robbie Shaff also from Allentown 6-4, 6-4. With this tournament victory Tressler could finish 2009 ranked in the top five in the ten and under division.

Tressler is also a member of the USTA Competition Training Center which is a select group of the most promising junior players in the area between the ages of 10 and 15 years old.

Josh Palmer and Paranjay Malhotra of Clarks Summit paired up to win the boys 18 and under doubles championships. Palmer, a senior at Abington Heights and Malhotra, a senior at Scranton Prep, practice together at Birchwood .

The duo defeated Zach Feldman and Brent Stevenson in the finals 8-3

The next tournament at Birchwood is the Junior Holiday Classic for boys and girls 18 and under, singles and doubles, held Saturday to Monday, Dec. 26 to 28.
