Carl Danzig, head men’s basketball coach at The University of Scranton, has announced that Travis Farrell (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) and local products Timothy Lavelle (Clarks Green/Scranton Preparatory) and Pat Mineo (Scranton/Scranton Preparatory) will join the Royals for the upcoming 2009-2010 season.
All three are expected to bolster a Royal backcourt hit hard by the graduation of first-team all-Landmark Conference selection Ryan FitzPatrick (Berwyn/Conestoga).
Lavelle and Mineo were teammates on a Scranton Preparatory team that went 24-8, won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District II championship and advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament in 2008 under head coach Joe Ferguson. The Cavaliers also posted a 15-8 mark last season.
Lavelle, a 5-foot, 10-inch point-guard, averaged 15 points, five rebounds and nearly eight assists per game in each of the last two seasons.
This past season, Mineo, a 6 foot shooting guard, averaged 17.4 points to earn first-team all-Lackawanna League. The Royals went 21-7, won their second consecutive Landmark Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in Danzig’s eight-year tenure as head coach this past season.
