Following are the results of last week’s high school sports contests.

BASEBALL Abington Heights

Lakeland’s April Doyle topped the shot put and discus, earning a fifth and sixth place seed at the PIAA state championships this week.

Abington’s five-run second inning helped lift them team to a 10-3 win over Scranton on May 13. Tony Castellano went 3-for-3 including a home run, and Anthony Pusateri connected on three of his four at bats.

The Comets lost a slugfest with Honesdale, 11-10, on May 14. Cory Spangenberg landed a three-run homer in the top of the seventh to tie the game.

SOFTBALL Abington Heights

The Lady Comets posted 16 runs in four innings to top Scranton 16-1 on May 13. Delia Riggi went 3-for-4 earning 2 RBIs in the win.

Julie Umerich had a double and a triple and Jill Heron landed a two-run single to push Abington past Honesdale, 3-0, on May 14.

Abington won a 2-1 meeting with Delaware Valley on May 15 to claim the Lackawanna League Division I title. Emily Orr struck out eight as Umerich, Kristen Mattern and Alexa Plevyak each had doubles.

Lackawanna Trail

Hanover Area defeated Lackawanna Trail, 5-3, on May 19. Paige Ross and Shawna Engle each had a double and a single in the loss.

Lakeland

Lakeland blanked Western Wayne 11-0 in five innings on May 13. Steph Racht and Kristi Tolerica each went 3-for-3 in the win.

The Lady Chiefs fell 9-4 to Valley View on May 14. Gabby Timms struck out five in the loss.

TENNIS Abington Heights

The Comets fell 5-0 to Radnor in the opening round of the PIAA Class AAA tennis team tournament on May 13.

Matt Garbin and Ken Doolittle fell to eventual Class AAA champions Chris Finney and Chris Miller in the quarterfinal, ending Abington’s chances for a District 2 doubles title on May 15.

TRACK AND FIELD Lackawanna Trail boys

Chris Joseph finished fourth in the 300 hurdles and took home bronze in the pole vault at the May 13 District 2 Class AA championships.

Lackawanna Trail girls

Hannah McMinn’s silver in the 100 hurdles at the District 2 Class AA championships earned her a berth to the PIAA state championships to be held in Hershey this weekend. Lauren Ellsworth placed third in the 100 after topping her preliminary heat.

Lakeland boys

The Chiefs took fifth overall at the May 13 District 2 Class AA championships. Justin Virbitsky won the discus at 155-7 and the 3200 relay team comprised of Mike Lisowski, Ryan Arthur, Matt Kugler and Drew Babcanec took first. Vince Tuzze (shot) and Babcanec (800) will also head to states based on their second place finishes.

Lakeland girls

April Doyle completed a perfect season with golds in the discus and shot put at the May 13 District 2 Class AA championships. Regina Ryan took home a bronze in the pole vault, but only Doyle will continue to state competition to represent the Lady Chiefs.

VOLLEYBALL Lackawanna Trail

Jake Bedford had 81 sets to aid Lackawanna Trail in a 3-1 win over Blue Ridge on May 13.

Trail suffered a 3-0 loss to Coughlin on May 19, ending their 2008 postseason.
