Holy Cross boys, Valley View girls in soccer doubleheader

The Holy Cross boys and Valley View girls will play in a doubleheader at Scranton Memorial Stadium Tuesday night when the state soccer playoffs open.

Both teams won District 2 championships.

Valley View (16-1) will open the doubleheader against Downingtown East (19-1-1) in Class AAA girls at 5 p.m. Downingtown East lost for the first time in the District 1 semifinals and recovered to win the consolation game and finish third.

Holy Cross (11-4) will play District 11 champion Schuylkill Haven (21-0) in Class A boys at 7 p.m.

The soccer sites and times were the last to be announced for the PIAA. Field hockey and girls' volleyball also have first-round play scheduled for Tuesday.

In other soccer playoff openers:

Class AA boys: District 2 champion Abington Heights (20-1) faces Tulpehocken, a District 3 runnerup with a 20-3 record, at Dunmore at 7, in a game that was announced earlier.

Class AA boys: District 2 runner-up Coughlin (15-1-1) plays District 3 champion Fleetwood at Exeter Township in Reading at 6.

Class AA girls: District 2 champion Montrose (10-5) plays District 4 champion Lewisburg (19-2-1) at Hughesville at 5.
