Lady Royals win cross country tltle

Stephanie Huth, Nicole Huth and Scranton Prep graduate Kathleen Druther led the way Saturday as the University of Scranton won the Landmark Conference women's cross country title.

The conference title, the first for a program that started in 1982, was part of a big day for the University of Scranton sports programs.

The Scranton men's and women's soccer programs won their regular-season finales and gained berths in the Landmark Conference playoffs.

The women's volleyball team closed the season with two wins while the field hockey team also wrapped up its year with a win.

In other action, the wrestling finished third out of six in its season-opening Electric City Duals, the women's swimming team won while the men's team lost and the men's cross country team finished fourth out of eight in the conference meet.

Both Huths and Druther earned first-team, all-conference by placing in the top seven in the meet. Stephanie Huth was fourth, Nicole Huth sixth and Druther seventh. Maria Cifone followed to give the Lady Royals four of the top eight.

Druther was named Landmark Rookie of the Year while Bill Burke was selected Coach of the Year.

Holy Cross graduate Dave Wasnetsky was second and Bishop O'Hara graduate Jason Bohenek seventh to give the Royals two first-team, all-stars in men's cross country.

North Pocono graduate Jeff Bochicchio scored his fourth goal of the year to help the Royals get past Goucher, 3-1, in men's soccer.

Scranton (4-2-1 in the Landmark and 11-4-2 overall) is the fourth seed and will play at top-seeded Drew Wednesday in the semifinals.

The Lady Royals outshot Goucher, 25-0, but did not get the goal in a 1-0 win until Emily Bruce scored in the last four minutes. The team then had to wait until Sunday to get official word that it was the fourth seed and will play at Catholic Wednesday.

Liz Carugan had two goals in the field hockey team's 3-1 win over Goucher to finish 9-10.

Freshman VInny Signoriello (133) and junior Mike Ebert (141) each went 4-0 on opening day for the Scranton wrestling team.
