UPDATED: Craig, Laytos reach state quarterfinals

Abington Heights senior Evan Craig needed just 1:45 to pin Norristown's Marcus Robbins in his first bout at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Craig, the defending 285-pound champion, improved to 47-0 and set up a quarterfinal showdown with once-beaten Adam Lazenga of Bethel Park.

Lazenga, the Southwest Regional champion who has the second-best record in the weight class, decisions Susquehannock's Zach Freet, 3-1.

Craig is the District 2 and Northeast Regional champion.

Lackawanna Trail sophomore Eric Laytos made a successful state wrestling tournament debut Thursday.

Laytos decisioned Delone Catholic's Joseph Kreiner, 6-3, in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA 215-pound opening round.

Laytos (38-6) advanced to Friday's quarterfinal against Charleroi's Ray Campbell (38-6), a 14-8 winner over Stan Williams of York.

All three District 2 wrestlers reached the quarterfinals. Blue Ridge's Alex Stanton (140) and Lake-Lehman's Shane Stark (171) were the others to advance.

Evan Craig of Abington Heights will be in action late Thursday afternoon when the Class AAA portion of the tournament opens.
