Leonard, Starr win Steamtown Masters titles

Three more runners have been added to the list of age-group prize winners.

Henry Gunther and George Stump were the fourth and fifth finishers among men 70 and over.

Dolores Manhoff was the fifth finisher among women 60-64.

SCRANTON -- The final two runners made it to the finish line in Scranton more than seven hours after they started the 14th annual Steamtown Marathon in Forest City.

A total of 1,889 runners finished the course. The runners included 1,190 men and 699 women.

The final count included 10 male runners of 70 years or older.

When Luis Corona crossed the finish line on Washington Avenue in downtown Scranton just before 1 p.m. Sunday, he allowed the Steamtown Marathon to set a record with its 1,673 finisher.

The 2006 event had 1,672 finishers.

More runners came in after Corona, a 31-year-old from Fresh Meadows, N.Y.

A total of 1,751 runners finished the course in 5:13:06 or better. That group included 1,123 men and 628 women. There were five men's finishers 70 years old or older and one woman finisher over 65.

SCRANTON -- The top five women's finishers are available in all age groups up through 55-59 along with some of the top finishers among runners older than 60.

Runners who received prize money for finishing among the top five women overall or top three Masters (40-and-over) women are excluded from age group awards.

SCRANTON -- Paul Leonard and Amanda Starr won Masters Division titles as the top 40-and-over runners in Sunday's 14th annual Steamtown Marathon.

Leonard, the overall winner of the first Steamtown Marathon in 1996, was eighth overall with a time of 2:36:33. Formerly from Scranton, Leonard, 47, now lives in Forty Fort.

Starr was the Masters Women's winner in 3:00:45. The 40-year-old from Lewisburg was 50th overall and sixth among women.

Leonard was followed in the Masters Men's Division by Dave Ruggles of Kingston, Ontario, Canada and John Weidner of Annandale, N.J. Ruggles, 44, ran the marathon in 2:46:16. Weidner, 46, finished in 2:50:29.

Mary Ann Protz, a 53-year-old from St. Petersburg, Fla., was the second Masters woman to finish with a time of 3:03:18.

Tammy Slusser was third in 3:04:06. Slusser, 44, is from Monroeville.
