Lions play for a cure

The Lackawanna Trail High School basketball team was one of 24 teams that took part in the first Dickinson men’s basketball “Coaches vs. Cancer High School Shootout” Sunday, July 18 at Dickinson College in Carlisle.

The tournament attracted schools from across Pennsylvania, as well as New Jersey and Maryland.

The cost to enter the shootout was $150, with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer fund.

“They contacted me because of my involvement with Coaches vs. Cancer,” said head coach Andrew Kettel. “This is the first year they did it, they hope for it to grow each year, and I hope we can get down there each year. It’s a great cause.”

Each team played three games, the members of Lions who participated-Tanner Holmes, David Boslough, Jordan Rose, Matt Lochen, Stephen Miller, Lyle Sweppenheiser, Dylan Harris, Matt Decker and James Owens finished the day victorious, with a 2-1 record.

The team defeated Bishop Guilfoyle High School, Altoona, 48-43, and Indian Valley High School, Lewistown, 66-39, before falling to Hughesville High School, Hughesville, 45-40.

“I’m happy with the way they played,” said Kettel. “Summer’s tough because the kids have a lot of other things going on, so it’s tough to get them on the court.”

“But, this gave us an opportunity to play together, and work some things out, before we go to our team camp next week.”

The Lions will be attending a team camp from Saturday, July 30 to Sunday, August 1, at Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia to get ready for the upcoming season.
