Powerlifting event set for Saturday

The USA Powerlifting Push and Pull to Kenya event will be held to help Abington Heights High School senior Jaime Coleman with her goal: gathering more than 4,200 shoes for people in Karagoto, Kenya. All proceeds from this event will go toward completing Coleman’s dream and aspiration of putting shoes on the people of Karagoto.

This event is coordinated by Steve and Jenny Mann of Clarks Summit. Steve, an American Record holder in the Bench Press, will also be competing in the Bench Press and Deadlift at this event.

This is a sanctioned, drug-tested event, under the same standards as U.S. Olympic athletes. Lifting begins at noon on Saturday, Aug 23, at the Clarks Summit Fire Hall, 321 Bedford Ave., Clarks Summit.

USA Powerlifting is a member of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), the governing body of powerlifting internationally. The IPF is comprised of member federations from 83 countries on six continents.

Powerlifting is distinct from weightlifting, a sport made up of two lifts: the Snatch and the Clean-and-Jerk, where the weight is lifted above the head. Powerlifting comprises three lifts: the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. Powerlifting competitions may be comprised of one, two or all three of the lifting disciplines. Athletes are categorized by sex, age and bodyweight. Each competitor is allowed three attempts at each lift, the best lift in each discipline being added to their total. The lifter with the highest total is the winner. In cases where two or more lifters achieve the same total, the person with the lightest bodyweight wins.
