SCRANTON -- The Valley View girls went to a shootout and the Abington Heights boys pulled away early in the second half Thursday night while winning District 2 soccer championships.
Gabby Santarelli made the deciding shot in the penalty kick shootout to lift Valley View to a 2-1 victory over Western Wayne in the Class AAA girls' championship at Scranton Memorial Stadium.
Tommy Steinbach scored two goals as Abington Heights handled Coughlin, 5-1, in the Class AA boys' final at Lake-Lehman.
Valley View's Sara Dubravcak scored on an assist from Taryn Tomczyk with 5:19 left in regulation to force overtime.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams proceeded to the shootout where each team got five attempts.
Jacqui Rossi, who only needed to make two saves in 110 minutes, stopped two shootout attempts for Valley View. Kristen Eberhart, Dubravcak and Tomczyk all connected before Santarelli got her chance to win it on the last shot.
Santarelli fired her attempt hard and low into the right side of the net for the win.
Abington Heights led just, 1-0, at halftime on the first of Steinbach's goals.
The Comets then broke away in the second half.
In girls' volleyball, Holy Redeemer swept three straight games from Dunmore to win the Class AA championship.
