The Comets rolled to the Lackawanna League final against Scranton Prep on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Paupak Hills Country Club, but the unbeaten Cavaliers won the title after a five-hole sudden death round.
The teams were tied after the 18-hole playoff which started at 11 a.m. so all three groups headed back out for sudden death.
After the first hole eliminated two pair, Abington Heights was down to seniors Connor Coldwater and Sasha Nelson. Four tied holes later, the sun had set and it was decided that play would resume on Thursday.
On the par five, fourth hole Prep’s Peter Nelson shot for birdie, sealing the win for his team.
“It was a little easier to take knowing that Peter Nelson from Prep birdied that hole,” said Williams.
Williams said the win was difficult because the entire season came down to one hole.
“Golf, like any other sport, is difficult to reduce to one play,” Williams said.
This match was the third time this season that Scranton Prep and Abington Heights had gone head-to-head.
The Comets won the season opening Jackman Tournament and Prep took their regular season match.
Leading up to their showdown with the Cavaliers the Comets beat Western Wayne 9-0 at home and then defeated Montrose 8-1 on the road.
Abington ended Montrose’s ten-year home winning streak in the playoffs.
“Really, as a team we played extremely well in the playoffs,” said Williams.
The season’s end marks the end of a career for Williams’ four seniors, Brian Mahlstedt, Connor Coldwater, Sasha Nelson and Luke Peterson. All four have started for at least three years.
The seniors have excelled on the course, but have also provided leadership for the team.
“Their leadership has been invaluable especially with the young kids,” said Williams of his senior class.
The end of the season has come for the team, but Erik Meyer, junior, will continue to golf next Monday. Meyer will travel to the Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetville for the Eastern Regional.
“Erik is as good as anyone when he’s playing well,” Williams said, adding the regional course is similar to Meyer’s home course of Glen Oaks.
