WILKES-BARRE TWP. – The Price Chopper along Route 309 is one step closer to receiving a restaurant liquor license.

At Monday’s work session, township council members gave their unanimous blessing for the grocery store to seek license to sell six-packs, 12-packs and single-serving containers of beer.

Attorney Stan Wolowski presented the grocery chain’s plan for a new restaurant inside from where beer may be sold. The restaurant, Wolowski said, is to seat 51 people and sell pizza, burgers and wings, among other menu items, and six-packs and 12-packs to go.

Wolowski said state law allows restaurant liquor license transfers from one restaurant to another as long as the receiving municipality approves. The transfer, foreseeably, also must not affect the welfare, health, peace and moral standards in that municipality.

The grocery store is open 24-hours-per day; however, Wolowski said the restaurant and single cash register for purchasing beer are to close daily at 11 p.m.

Wolowski said Price Chopper administrators seek a liquor license mostly so customers can purchase beer to go. If customers want beer with their meals in the restaurant, he said they will be capped at one serving per-sitting.

Councilman Jerry Shinal said now that the township has granted approval, Price Chopper administrators can seek approval from the state Liquor Control Board, but he said this process may take time.

“We’ve been doing a bunch of these,” Shinal said about approving restaurant liquor licenses for grocery stores. “But it’ll be months before the LCB grants approval.”

In other business, township residents filing their local income taxes must include PSD code 400908 and should be aware that Wilkes-Barre city uses a different code.

What’s next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, March 4.
