WILKES-BARRE – A Luzerne County judge has thrown out a lawsuit filed by a former Diocese of Scranton teacher and teachers’ union president who alleged that he was laid off because of his involvement with the union.

SCRANTON – The Diocese of Scranton has expanded programs and improved background checks in an ongoing effort to protect children from sexual misconduct, the Diocesan newspaper reported Thursday. The details were included in a Catholic Light article announcing that an annual audit by an outside agency found the diocese “in compliance” with national guidelines for protecting children.

SCRANTON – Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty has secured a third term as mayor of Scranton, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s general election. Scranton city council, meanwhile, retained one councilwoman, Janet Evans, and will welcome two new faces, Pat Rogan and Frank Joyce – all Democrats.

Bleachers receive facelift

Matt Fiegleman, 17, is a Life Scout with Clarks Green Troop 251 who is refurbishing the bleachers at Abington Heights Middle School. His parents are Laurie and Billy Fiegleman and his Scoutmaster is Mike Minello. Matt is currently serving as a Patrol Leader in his troop, which consists of 35 boys. His Eagle Project had to be approved first by the school board, then by Scout House in Moosic before work could begin. The first phase of his project was Sunday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There were nine boys in attendance and three adults. The second phase of the project will be Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will involve painting the railing white, sanding the wooden seats and replacing the wood on the seats that are in bad shape.

Timmy’s Town Center open Nov. 13

The children’s museum, Timmy’s Town Center (TTC) will open its doors on Friday, Nov. 13, at The Mall at Steamtown with an open house from 5 to 9 p.m., coinciding with Santa’s arrival at the mall. Admission is free that evening. TTC is in memory of Timmy Kelly, the son of Timothy Kelly, Esq. and Lexie McFarland Kelly.
