‘Cheap’ chairs valuable

Dallas resident Nancy Dingman routinely bought “cheap” chairs for about 50 cents the first night of the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction in the early 1970s so she and her husband, Bob, had somewhere to sit during the event.

The Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction, in its 63rd year this year, has been under the direction of more than 45 different chairpersons. Thee have been 12 different women serving in the position with Rena Rothschild becoming the first in 1978 and Karen Shuster and Lisa Pretko handling chairperson duties this year.

Karen Shuster, this year’s library auction chairman, admits she loves antiques- like tea sets, antique sewing machines and wash stands. Among auction finds in her Dallas home are a Victrola hand-painted by Maryann Daly, train memorabilia and old fire extinguishers.

Although tradition is one of the main reasons people come back to the auction year after year, the auction committee still tries to keep the event fresh. This year two more crafters and two additional food vendors will come on board, as will two new booths.

Dallas Rotary gives scholarships to students

The Rotary Club of Dallas awarded $500 book scholarships to six college-bound seniors from Dallas, Lake-Lehman and Northwest Area school districts. A dinner was held in the students’ honor. The scholarship program has existed for more than 50 years and has awarded more than $55,000 in scholarships. The club meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at Pickett’s Charge Restaurant, Dallas.
