Pilger gets first turkey

Dylan Pilger, 13, of Kunkle, shot his first turkey on November 28 while hunting with his father and his friend, Bill and Jake. The turkey weighed 17 pounds and had a 9-inch bear. Pilger is having the turkey mounted by Jeff May of Sweet Valley.

Lake-Lehman Band members celebrate

Members of the Lake-Lehman Marching Band gathered recently for their championship party to celebrate the many awards earned by the band this year. The band is under the direction of Greg Riley, who is assisted by Pat Stanley. Drum Major is Molly Murphy, a senior who has won the best drum major award two years in a row. The band won the best woodwinds category and tied for best visual with Biglersville at the Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championships at the J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown. First-place awards went to Governor Livingston from New Jersey with a 96.25 while Lake-Lehman finished second at 96.10 and Biglersville came in third at 95.80 There were over 28 bands from nine states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and North Carolina, competing for the title.

Daddow-Isaacs Dallas American Legion Post 672 held its traditional Veterans Day service on November 11 on the Post grounds. Officers of the Post read excerpts from the Legion Manual, Marion Kunigonis provided some remarks pertaining to women veterans and a rendition of “God Bless America” was sung by all in attendance. A US Flag donated by Senator Lisa Baker was dedicated and two wreaths were provided for the Legion monument and the Veterans Monument at Dallas Center. Commander Clarence J. Michael presided.

Louise Hazeltine honored upon retirement from food pantry

More than 50 people gathered at an afternoon reception at the Trucksville United Methodist Church on October 24 to honor Louise Hazeltine who has retired as the coordinator for the Back Mountain Food Pantry. She has worked tirelessly for the past seven years to make the food pantry efficient and effective to better serve the clients who depend upon it. Hazeltine was honored with a gold leaf placed on the Tree of Life at the Trucksville Church as well as proclamations from State Senator Lisa Baker and State Representative Karen Boback. She also received a Certificate of Appreciation for her service from the Rotary Club of Dallas. Elva Valentine, left, of Valentine’s Jewelry and Ron Thomas, of American Gold Buying Inc., will donate a percentage of their jewelry sales and gold buys to the Back Mountain Food Pantry during November and December to help out with the increasing needs of the food pantry clients in our area. The demand for food has gone up 20 percent since the beginning of the year. Both businesses are located on Route 309 in Dallas.
