Youth football league suit ‘amicably’ settled

Team challenged conference over player’s residency. Settlement kept private.

A civil lawsuit filed by a youth football club seeking to reinstate a player who was suspended by the league has been settled, an attorney said.

Details of the settlement were not publicly disclosed.

Kingston Township Raiders filed the lawsuit in Luzerne County Court last Friday against the Wyoming Valley West Youth Football Conference and five executive officers, alleging the league unfairly suspended a player on the Raiders “A” team.

According to the suit, the league received an anonymous letter challenging the residency of a 13-year-old player on Sept. 28, nearly two months after registration and five weeks into the season.

The player resides with his father in Hunlock Township, which the league’s by-laws describe as an “open territory,” which is any town within 20 miles of the Wyoming Valley West stadium that does not have a youth football organization.

The lawsuit claimed the league and its officers failed to follow its own by-laws when a player’s residency is challenged.

A hearing scheduled before a judge on Thursday in an attempt to have the league reinstate the player was canceled when a compromise was reached.

“While the league was prepared to defend the lawsuit in court, the matter has been resolved amicably in the best interest of the players,” according to a news release that was sent by attorney Jarrett Ferentino, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Raiders.

“The settlement preserves the integrity of the league’s rules and is fair to both parties, as well as to the other teams in the league. The parties agree that actions of the league to enforce its by-laws in this case were taken solely in the interest of fairness and for the benefit of the players,” the news release says.

According to the league’s by-laws, once a player is deemed ineligible, every game in which the player participated will be forfeited.

The news release doesn’t state if the Raiders’ undefeated season remains intact or will be expunged. Ferentino said in a voice mail that details of the settlement will remain private because of the boy’s age.

I am happy this worked out. I think Attorney ferentino did a good thing here. He really mediated what could have been a long drawn out situation and helped our kids

HMMMM.....The KT Raiders A team doesn't appear on the playoff schedule for the conference, all the other levels do. Well I guess we know who was lying about where this kid lived. See what cheating gets you Stan. I'm just glad that the honest people in the Raiders organization put a stop to this madness so all the other levels did not suffer. All this for one man's arrogant quest for a title.

Please look at the Wyoming Valley West Youth Football Conference web page. Obviously the child was ineligible. They have a 9-0 record and are in last place and are not in the playoffs. Hope the coach, parent of the child and the KT executive board are proud of themselves. They seem to have forgotten that it is about the children. If you cheat, you pay the consequences. The WVWYFC league did no wrong and The times leader should be publishing the facts

Well if the Raiders dont end up in the playoffs, then it will be clearly obvious they cheated by having an illegal player and they will be stripped of all winnings like the bylaws say... if they are in the playoffs then I guess they didnt cheat.. why didnt they just give proof of residency when asked for it?? he shouldnt have been able to play until he provided proof... everyone else has to have it or they cant play...

If Ferentino wanted to do a "good job" he would of stated that the by-laws clearly state that you could only sign an open teritory player if they resided in your towns school district. Last I checked Hunlock Twp. children do NOT go to Dallas. They also forgot to mention that this coach had a player from plains and larksville on his team, and oh by the way this same coach coached all these players in Lacross this past summer. Im sure he didnt know where they lived though, yea right....

I thought the idea of sports is that it is a TEAM effort. So everyone has been saying that without this kid then the TEAM would have never won. Really? I thought there was no I in TEAM! Apparently in this case it's different. If they won every game because of this child then the NFL better get a scout out there soon before someone else picks him up. Crazy. I understand there are rules and bi-laws to every sport but to make it sound as if the team would have never won without this child is absurd. Again it's a TEAM not just ONE KID!

Any one that cares on here or wastes this much time caring about what team a kid played on besides actually doing work at their place of employment needs to get a life you people will bicker about anything and should all be fired!!

13! This kid should be a in a junior high program anyway. Typical mini football garbage! Parents and unqualified coaches trying to live "the dream". Do your kids a favor and sign them up for a school program so they can learn something from a qualified educator. 99% of these coaches are straight from the trailer park and could care less about edcuating these kids. It has always been a problem and it will never change.

Wonder what team challenged the residency issue. This did not just come up by chance it was either another jealous team that lost to KT, or its another case of sour grapes (why is that boy playing more than my Johnny?) This happens on every team in every league.

You people are insane! Obviously, none of you have any clue why and what happened or you wouldn't be calling the Raiders "cheaters"! If you put this much effort into a charity instead of rumors, the world would be much better off! Have some class! Go support a real cause!

And how many years did this child play on the team? Why would anyone question anything to begin with? Must have been jealousy because they were winning? All you people did was hurt the kids, hope you are proud of yourself. From reading these, I don't believe it was an arrogant quest, sounded to me like it was a team, one for all and all for one. Too bad parents can't see that sports are supposed to be fun.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME – What lesson are you teaching the children? The parents from the Raiders D, C, & B teams are NAIVE if they actually think the A-Team did something wrong and the other members of the league created this controversy out of fear and contempt from losing to a better team. The anonymous letter writer must be a person who does not know how to teach their child right from wrong. Instead, this DERISORY GROUP, who are an embarrassment to their children, are trying to compensate their own shortcomings by distraction and demeaning the undefeated A-Team –RAIDER NATION WAS CHEATED – EVENTUALLY THE REAL VILLAIN WILL BE EXPOSED. EVERYONE SHOULD FEEL SHAME.

to R, i was there. they are cheating. they got caught. they got punished. it's for the kids, but the adults screwed up. don't try to make the raiders a picture of perfection, because they certainly are not, right from the top

You must have a child on the A team if you are actually defending the wrong that was done and are rightly upset if your child is being penalized and was there legally. However the blame is where it should be. That child should NOT have been on the KT Raiders and they still signed him on so unfortunately the entire team is now suffering for the decision the ADULTS made. There are rules and they all know them. Good luck to the rest of the KT Raiders and all other teams that will be in the playoffs this Sunday. Lets hope for a better HONEST season next year.

People should do some research before they write-- part of Hunlock Creek is in the Lehman school district(open territory)--DUH! -too bad the only way Bk Mt had a chance to win the Super Bowl was to twist the league by-laws to their benefit--any playoff victory will be an empty one

This entire situation could have been avoided if the Kingston Twp Raider Football board members did their job. Ther's a reason you aks for proof of residency on your registration forms, if you would have checked it properly this would not be an issue now. You as a board are resposible for your coaches and players, you let the kids down and you should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope you have learned a lesson here. Take control of your team and do whats right for ALL.
