Only Yesterday

Albert Sutcavage of Trucksville and Craig Harger of Luzerne have been awarded scholarships at Penn State Wilkes-Barre specially designated for telecommunications technology students.

The scholarships are named for Gilbert A. Wetzel, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Ball of PA, who has established a scholarship endowment at the campus, each year funding two scholarships for students in the campus’ very specialized telecommunications technology program.

Students from lake-Lehman High School participated in the 13th “Knowledge Master Open,” a national grueling academic contest. Over 40,000 students across the United States, Canada, and the Pacific Basin competed in the contest. Using their knowledge in the areas of Trigonometry, World History, Chemistry and 13 other areas of curricula, these students faced tough questions and vied for top scores based on speed and accuracy. Participants included Jeff Gold, Judy Andrejko, Dave Konopke and Megan Lukasavage.

30 YEARS AGO

Gate of Heaven girls’ JV basketball team finished the season with a 10-0 record taking the West Side League JV championship trophy. The Gatorettes dumped St. Jude’s of Mountaintop, 20-4, as Kim Yanchick tossed in 10 points. Leah Slattery netted six and Pam Solinski added four to pace the winners. Other members of the team are: Ann Ryan, Maria Stahovec, Danette Yanchick, Cathy Leonard and Becky Hughes.

Champions of the young division of the Dallas Basketball Organization this season were Len Medura, Mike McDermott, Chris McCall, John Mokychic, Dan Reynolds, Frank Joyce and Dave Myeski.

Participants in the Dallas Junior Woman’s Club Sewing Contest met recently at the home of Suzanne Artman to have their entries judged, and model their outfits for club members, judges and guests.

Winners included Bonnielynn Vail, Jill Lipovsky, Sue Wolbert, Tina Piekanski and Tina Karasek.

40 YEARS AGO

The Dallas Senior High School cheerleaders won the championship of the second annual cheerleading tourney sponsored by the Luzerne County Community College Friday night. The Mountaineers cheerleading squad put on a first class performance in the tourney finals at the Catholic Youth Center, Wilkes-Barre, defending the title they had won last year.

Members of the squad included Judy Allen and Debbie Anderson, co-captains, Mary Cully, Kathy Dorosky, Roberta Gilbert, Sue Owens, Carol Shaskan, Nancy Thomas, Patti Koeb, Sandra Long and Cynthia Smith.

The mathematics department of Lake-Lehman High School recently installed the last of the new equipment in its math laboratory and according to Stanley J. Gulbish, math instructor, is now totally equipped to allow a better presentation of math courses with visuals for all circumstances. The lab which includes calculators and a minvac computer, cost $10,862.40 which was made available through Title III of the National Defense Education Act ($7,403.05) and a proportionate share provided by the school district ($3,459.35).

Students learning to use the new equipment include Robert Kocher, Jack Davis, Jane Cornell, Elizabeth Zbick, Richard Evans, John Davis, Brad Kreller, Brent Steele, Jay Remly, Joan Evans, Sheila Kopcha, Greg Moyer and Michael Brody.

50 YEARS AGO

Two students from Westmoreland have been selected to participate in State Band at Sunbury High School later this month.

Marilyn Eck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Eck, Shavertown, will play the bass clarinet. Harold Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Smith, Trucksville, will play the tenor saxophone.

Mary Jane Jerista was named Girl of the Year by Dallas Junior Woman’s Club Tuesday evening in Prince of Peace parish hall. Four runners-up were introduced, Grace Ann Bachman, Evelyn Orchard, Edna Rogers and Edna Lipfert, all top-flight, all Honor Students.

Daddow-Isaacs American Legion will celebrate its 25th Anniversary March 11 at the Legion Home. Twenty-five year pins for continuous membership will be presented to Albert Stetzer, N. Edwin Nelson, Thomas G. Reese, Clare Winters, Harold Titman, John Blackman, Frank Ferry, John Garbutt, David J. Joseph, Lewis LeGrand, William McNeel, H. Brook Arnold, Stanley Wrobleski, Paul Shaver, Charles Stookey, Arthur Dungey, James Hummel, Clyde Veitch, Ralph Antrim and Wayne King.

60 YEARS AGO

George Howe of Shavertown was elected president of the newly formed Toll Gate Lions’ Club of Shavertown and vicinity at its meeting held Tuesday night at Colonial Inn, Fernbrook. Other officers elected are: Charles Wagner, Fernbrook, first vice president; William Thomas, Shavertown, second vice president; Samuel Prater, Fernbrook, third vice president; A. George Prater, Fernbrook, secretary; Theodore A. Poad, Shavertown, treasurer; Rev. Frederick Moock, Jr., Shavertown and Paul Winter, Shavertown, directors for two year terms; J. Lear Wagner, Shavertown and Albert Pesavento, Trucksville, directors for one year terms; Martin Walsh, Fernbrook, tail twister; and Chester Hartman, Fernbrook, Lion Tamer.

Mrs. Ruth Turn Reynolds, Minister of Music at Dallas Methodist Church and an outstanding musical artist of the Back Mountain area will participate in the third annual Community Concert at Kingston Township High School Auditorium Friday night. This year’s concert promises to be the best thus far.

Mrs. Reynolds will give several vocal solos, accompanied by Mrs. Louie Weigand Ayre at the piano, with whom she shares a studio in Wilkes-Barre. Mrs. Reynolds also teaches voice in Luzerne and Dallas and is widely known in Wyoming Valley music circles.

70 YEARS AGO

The Senior Class of Lehman High School will present “Next Door Neighbors,” a three-act comedy by Leon Cunningham at the high school auditorium Tuesday night. J. Austin Snyder, supervising principal, is directing the production, which is being staged to raise money for the commencement trip of the seniors to Washington, D.C.

Members of the cast are Stella Cease, Marion Elston, Margaret Tribler, Joan Winter, Ruth Williams, Margaret Walters, Eleanor Hardisky, Harry Howell, James Agnew, Richard Parks, Harry Edwards and Haydn Ambrose.

Seats are being moved into the completed second-floor addition to Dallas Township high school building and within a few weeks pupils in the 40-year-old Goss School House will be transferred to the new section.

School directors have not decided what will be done with the abandoned frame building. Several years ago, when the annex was under consideration, the board suggested that the Goss school be moved to a lot adjoining the high school and be used for shoprooms.
